Transcription THE GLORIOUS CHARGE OF THE NINTH LANCERS A magnificent feat of the Ninth Lancers , recalling the famous Balaclava charge , was accomplished during the retreat of the Allied left from Le Cateau on 25th August , 1914. A German battery of eleven guns , posted in a wood , and disguised with quantities of forage , had caused havoc in the British ranks .

DURING THE GREAT RETREAT FROM MONS TO CAMBRAI . All attempts at silencing the guns having proved ineffectual , the Ninth Lancers rode straight at them , across the open , through a hail of shells from other German batteries , and cut down all the gunners and put every gun out of action . The whole of the Allied Forces rang with praise of the charge .
