POLO
INTER - REGIMENTAL
TOURNAMENT
FROM OUR POLO CORRESPONDENT
The Royal Scots Greys qualified to meet the 7th Hussars in the final tie of the Inter Regimental Tournament at Hurlingham on Saturday when , in the second semi - final on the club's No. 1 Ground yesterday , they beat the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers , after extra time had been played , by six goals to five . This was after a terrific struggle . at the end of which both teams had had enough . The match was so evenly con tested that neither side deserved to lose .
The Greys won the tournament last year , when they had Captain Guinness and 1r . Findlay in their side . They were with out these two good players yesterday , as Captain Guinness is recuperating from an iuness and Mr. Findlay recently had an operation for appendicitis . In the circum ances the Greys have done exceedingly well to reach the final once more , and they are a sufficiently well - balanced side to have a good chance of success on Saturday . The Lancers , who total two points fewer than the Greys on handicap , put up a great fight , and if the final is anything like so exciting it will be well worth watching .
LANCERS ' EARLY LEAD Captain G. E. Prior - Paimer , whose handicap accounts for half the Lancers ' aggregate of 12 points , opened the scoring early in the first chukker , riding off Major Gaisford St. Lawrence and hitting through with a near - side shot . The Greys were kept on the defensive for several minutes , during which Mr. Perry narrowly missed with a long - range drive , but Major Gaisford St. Lawrence suddenly broke away and hit up to The Mr. Calthorpe , who promptly equalized . Lancers had four free hits from 60 yards during this period , but could not turn any of them to advantage , although from one of them Cap tain G. E. Prior - Palmer missed by not more than
a yard . Mr. Calthorpe nearly put the Greys ahead with a neat shot under his pony in the second chukker . but it was the Lancers who took the lead when Mr. Perry scored from a hit - up
by Captain G. E. Prior - Palmer . From the throw in Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer made the score 3-1 from a pass by Mr. Perry , but before the bell the Greys got a goal back , Mr. Mackeson hitting through from a centre by Mr. Lopes .
Play continued to be keenly and evenly con tested , with the Greys , if anything , looking the more dangerous side in attack . Mr. Lopes and Mr. Mackeson each went close before Captain G. E. Prior - Palmer narrowly missed from his brother's pass at the other end . A nice piece of combined play by the Greys enabled them to draw level , Mr. Calthorpe scoring with a fine shot which Mr. Lopes chased through the goal and crashed into a goal - post in doing so . Down went the post and down went Mr. Lopes . but fortunately he was not hurt and was up again in less time than it takes to tell . Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer had a fine chance to put the Lancers in front again , but he took things too easily , and Major Gaisford St. Lawrence got back to make a great save . From his clear ance Mr. Calthorpe got well away , and making
no mistake with his final shot gave the Greys
the lead at 4-3 just before the end of the third chukker .
TWO BLANK CHUKKERS
Each side attacked in turn during the next two chukkers , but neither could score , although each goal had some narrow escapes . Mr. Mackeson saved almost on the goal - line from Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer , and Mr. Calthorpe stopped a run by Mr. Perry just in time and also cleared a good shot by Captain Todd . Then it was the neys turn , but Captain Todd saved cleverly from Mr. Lopes , and Major Gaisford St. Lawrence missed by inches with a splendid cross - shot . Mr. Lopes and Mr. Mackeson made shots that deserved goals , but hit ponies , and Mr. Perry was only just wide with a backhander following a run by Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer . And so it went on , and the score - board still read four - three in favour of the Greys when the sixth chukker was begun . The Lancers quickly equalized , Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer scoring with a shot under his pony from a fine centre by his brother , but the Greys attacked from the throw - in , and , after Major Gaisford St. Lawrence had just missed , Mr. Calthorpe met the hit - out and gave them the lead again with a grand drive . The Lancers made desperate efforts to avert defeat , and , sure enough , with only half a minute left for play , Captain G. E. Prior - Palmer equalized again from a centre by his brother . That meant that extra time had to be played , and after a rest two rather weary - looking teams - it must be admitted that the Lancers appeared to be the wearier of the two - began a seventh chukker . The Greys pressed immediately , and after exactly three minutes ' play Mr. Lopes obtained the all important goal with a backhander from a pass by Mr. Mackeson .
The teams were :
ROYAL SCOTS GREYS . - Mr . M. H. E. Lopes No. 1 : Mr. H. R. Mackeson , No. 2 : Mr. R. H. A. G Calthorpe , No. 3 ; and Major Gaisford St. Lawrence back
91 QUEEN'S ROYAL LANCERS . Mr. RS Ferry , No. 1 : Captain O. L. Prior - Palmer , No , Captain G. E. Prior - Palmer , No. 3 ; and Captain Cit . Todd , back .
