On September 21st 1920 , three boys joined the 9th Lancers , at Assaye Barracks , Tidworth , and from being schoolboys they took the numbers ; 310013 Deacon , James 310014 Dennis , Henry and 310015 King C. Fifty years later , on September 21st 1970 , they met at Assaye Barracks to celebrate and mark the happy event that had commenced many happy years with the Regiment . They are standing outside the Band Block , Assaye Barracks , where , for them , it all began . James Deacon In the picture from viewers L to R. This was a special re - union in that a local Riding School saddled up 18 horses and we got mounted again - something that none of us had done for 25-30-40-45 years . Nobody ' bit the dust and the OC Ride was mounted for more than 2 hours while the BBC NATIONWIDE Team filmed the auspicious event . Bill Holloway did not ride , but Spur Taylor , then 79 and Alf Spickett then 81 , both rode with distinction these two distinguished 9th Lancers are together on the left of the lady owner of the stak stables Of those riding that day , only 2 were under 65 - all the remainder were in the years 65 - 75 , and in addition Spur Taylor and Afl Spickett , and Bill Holloway who was 88 . - 38 |
