TANK CHARGES A WALL . - Yet another accident with an Army tank occurred in this village on Thursday . At about mid - day , one of these vehicles collided with the wall bordering the main road just west of the school . It was one of the light type , and be longed to the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers , stationed at Tidworth . Proceeding towards the village at a fair speed , it drew towards its left to pass a small saloon car , when it appar ently hit the County Council " School " sign erected on the grass verge close to the wall . This caused it to swerve and demolish part of the wall , finally coming to rest broad - side across the road . The driver of the car had a narrow escape ; he had just scraped by when the accident occurred . The driver of the tank escaped with a few cuts and a severe shaking , but two other members of the crew were un scathed . No visible damage was suffered by the tank , which went on to Tidworth under its own power . 26.1.39 JOHN GENTRY Joined the 9th Lancers as a trooper and served throughout the Boer War . Served twenty - one years with the Regiment , eventually becoming Regimental Sergeant Major . After leaving the Regiment , he lived at St James , C.P. South Africa . On the out - break of the 1914-18 war , he joined Hartigan's Horse and was commissioned . He saw service in S.W. Africa and for some months was personal body - guard for the late General Smuts . At the end of the S.W. African Campaign , he went to England and saw service in France and on the Italian front , with , I think , one of the South African Regiments . He was mentioned in despatches . At the end of the war he returned to South Africa and started in business at the St James Hotel , St James , Cape Province . He died there July 27th 1938 , aged 62 and was buried with full military honours - an unusual tribute paid him by the South African Forces , at Mingenberg , Cape Province .
