REX BENSON . Jumping " Snakefences " in U.S.A. He won a lot of Point - to - points ' in England , but decided to compete with the Americans . So he shipped his horses out there . ( ( 9 >> He had a marvellous groom , in his Canterbury days . This man ( Mr. Byrne ) sported a red worsted waistcoat , with five pockets . In each of these pockets was a small bottle of medicine . ( ( So , the night before a race , it sometimes happened that both Rex and his mount got a dram out of the same small bottle , for the cold in the head " . Rex's early troubles were that he found it difficult to go on the right side of the " flag " . Shades of " Ginger " , " Corkscrew " , and " The Other Gal " ! |
