" ROCK " ( CHOLMONDELEY )
AND THE GRENFELL TWINS
Made three of the team that won the Polo Championship in U.S.A. before the First World War and were the
(
only British Team to ' get away with it " . They had a system . They were probably the first to invent it . Francis and Rivy used to whistle across the ground to each other . Each rode on the outside line .
Very well ! " Rock " would hit the ball out to ( say ) Francis . Instead of Francis galloping up the right hand side of the ground , as expected by their opponents , he'd just smash it across to Rivy , who would be on half gallop , awaiting on the left line .
It was often then that Rivy would have a free run .
If he hadn't , the other twin , feeling free , would whistle , from the right . Back came the ball , to be collected at gallop , and a good shot at goal !
" Rock " had a very powerful drive , either side .
It is interesting to recall that Rivy won the Kadir Cup ( pigsticking ) in India , and that Francis , his twin brother , nearly won , instead of him .
You will see more of " Rock
later on .
