First Foreigner as German Amateur Champion since 1884
At the beginning of the century foreign jockeys were the best in the German racing world . This did not change until after the first world war . A few years earlier there had already been a change in the steeplechases , when J. Birghan , T. Bastian , L. Printen and others were riding . At the same time J. Rastenberger , Albert Schlaefke , Otto Schmidt and Anton Olejnik who rode in flat racing , were restoring the glory of the German jockey . Lately , however , there has been a strong foreign influence in the leading class , some having been champions .
The championship for amateura , however , has always seemed to have been a purely German achievement . The last foreigner to appear on the list of successful gentlemen riders was an Irishman , W.H. Moore in 1883 and 1884 . He later took a trainer's licence and settled in Hoppegarten .
For some years officers of the British army have been riding in amateur races . They strengthened the steeplchases with their horses . They are well liked and welcome guests . The German stables were soon asking the English to ride , and in 1958 an unpretentious , young man with glasses , Lt. N. Upton , was vice Champion behind the already immortal Rickwan Freiherr Von der Lancken . The Champion did not forget to speak of the high quality of this impressive opponent at the Annual Amateur Meeting on the occasion of his victory .
The new amateur champion needs a little propaganda . He has not got the normal qualities that go to make a " Darling of the Masses " . If he did not always wear his gold and scarlet regimental tie , nobody would recognize the officer in Nick Upton . The pale face with the ill becoming nickel spectacles and the awkward , nearly shy , bearing speak against it .
Nicholas Upton was born on 19th August 1937 in Lonfon ; he is just 22 years old . His family has connections with the racing fraternity . His father is a functionary under national Hunt Rules . His brother Patrick John Upton had already ridden in Germany races when he was an officer in BAOR , before Lt N. Upton joined the 9th Lancers in Detmold .
N. Upton , by the age of 15 , had already ridden at point to point meetings . At his first try at Torrington , Devon , he was third on a horse Joker . He had in all 20 wins at point to point meetings before coming to Germany .
On his first ride in Germany Upton rode C.D.B. , which later ran well in a class ' B ' race at Verden / Aller . At Hassloch he won the Badenia 1957 on Thales for C. Lochbuchler , owner of the stable in the Area .
Again and again Upton was mounted by German trainers , especially when Willi Schuetz discovered the talent of the Englishman . At this time the 9th Lancers stable was having considerable bad luck , with horses dropping out . Lunch Interval which Upton bought in the Spring 1959 from H.H. Blagrave , a trainer at Blackhampton , Wiltshire , did not prove successful as had been hoped .
Upton was involved in the misfirtune of the 9th Lancers . After protest the stables received the Badenia 1959. In this Tillside beat Marc Anton , 2nd best horse in Germany , but was disqualified by the race Directorate . The revisal of the judgement lasted months . The stable forgot to take the weight for the not yet revised judgement by the Directorium and therefore Tillside , ridden by Upton was disqualified . Just before this verdict was given Tillside , again ridden by Upton , won the Jungritter - Rennen on the very difficult Neusser Steeplechase . The lost point was not , however , missed by Upton for his championship .
