THE GUJARAT CUP PIG - STICKING MEET , 1892 . The Meet was held this year at the same place as the last few years , some 20 miles south of Ahmedabad , where there are jungles of grass and tamarisk ou the banks of the Sabasmati river . The country about here is excellently wooded , and there is no difficulty in finding camping - grounds with ample shade for men and horses . The camp this year was a large one , as , in addition to some dozen competitors from this side , the Maharana of Dholpur and the Maharaja of Patiala were both present , bringing with them a large number of hunters , and adding greatly to the striking ap- . pearance of the camp , which was very prettily situ ated in a grove of mango and other trees near the village of Amliala , and about 2 miles from the nearest cover on the river side . The Sabsmati jungles always require a con siderable amount of beating the surrounding country being devoid of crops and other cover at this time of year , the pig collect in the thick and heavy riverside jungles , and can with difficulty be induced to break . The three first days of the meeting only saw five heats run off , some bad luck having been experienced in heats failing to get on to pig which broke , and the question was raised whether all second chances for the Gujarat . Cup should not be scratched , in order to secure the completion of the competition - the rules , how ever , only admit of this being done before heats are drawn , and since opinion was not unanimous on the point , it was determined to go on with the second chances for the Gujarat Cup , and allow the other events to take their chance . As the result proved , all the events were brought off success fully , and it was generally held that the com mittee were well - advised in allowing the second chances to continue . These are always very popular , and any sug gestion to curtail them naturally meets with dis favour , especially when some heats have been decided , and the losers would be deprived of their chance of re - entering the lists . At the same time it is possible that emergencies may arise which may make it imperative to abandon the second chances and the power of doing so should clear ly be lelt in such cases either in the hands of the committee or in an appeal to the majority of the competitors , which could always be obtained for this course if there was really a strong case for it , in which event the committee could afford to despise the perhaps inevitable discontent of a minority . The runs this year on the whole were good and well contested , a larger proportion than usual of the boar ridden b ing of a fair size . It is always a pity when a heat has to be started after a squeaker which jinks about under the horses ' legs and deprives the competition of any real resem blance to the sport of hog hunting . The horses ridden were also of a better class than usual , in a great measure oving to the presence of the Maharana and Maharaja , and the competitors who accompanied them , whose joint stud numbered some alty horses . Some of these , e . g . that fine horse Donegal , ridden by the Maharana of Dhol pur , were almost perfect specimens of what a pigsticker should be : fast , admirably handy , and excellent jumpers , and ridden as they were in a masterly style , it is not surprising that most com petitors on this side of the country found them selves somewhat out - classed . The Maharana of Dholpur , one of the joint winners of the Gujarat Cup this year , is well known in pigsticking circles : his cousin , the Maharaja of Patiala , who owes to him , I believe . his education in the sport , proved himselt a most creditable pupil , and was deserved ly congratulated on all hands on the success he has attained . By the time that the first round was completed , it was pretty generally held that the Cup would fall to either the Maharana of Dholpur , the Maharaja of Patiala , or General Gurdit Singh , whose horse Mutiny is an exceeding ly clever performer . Captain Legallais on Ptarmi gan was their only dangerous rival : he secured his heat in both first and second chances , and had an excellent look in for the second round , where in one heat he got first on to the pig , but lost his chance , apparently through over - anxiety , his spear going between the pig's legs . The drawing of heats after dinner on the even ing of the 11th resulted as follows : GUJARAT CUP , 1st heat . Umpire . Sahij was the first cover beaten , lying some six miles below camp ; a thick tamarisk jungle , bound ed by a steep bank on the side away from the river . No I heat of the Gujarat Cup was first started in the river bed after a good boar , which crossed the water , and in attempting to scale a steep bank on the other side fell back again into the sandy bottom . The spears , however , were not close enough to secure him , and he ran some way before making another attempt to scale the bank , which he tried to do unsuccessfully in two places ; at the secend attempt meeting Captain Legallais ' spear in his descent . On the further side of the river the second and third heats were started alter the same sounder the second heat getting on to a small pig in the open , General Gurdit Singh got on at once and speared it very smartly on M tiny . In the third heat , Mr. Lyttleton was left at the start , not hearing the word to ride , ' and Dr. Bull and the Maharana of Dholpur rode the pig in turn , until Lyttleton coming up , raced the Maharana . The pig fiually jinked and was cleverly speared by the Maharana as it was going underneath a cactus hedge . After tiffin the covers were beaten again , the fourth and fitth heats of the Gujarat Cup and the second pony heat being out . No. 5 heat was started twice , once after a very small and active pig , which all in turn failed to spear and which finally got away into a boggy nullah ; secondiy rather too near the jungle side , the pig getting back to cover . The other heats did some galopping about , but failed to get on to a pig . Next day the home covers , Amliala and Chit rasor , were beaten , the latter first , where No. 5 was started , but the pig got back to the grass without being speared . In the afternoon at Amliala no pig could be got to break till late in the day , when the same heat , was started after a boar which crossed the river . All three competi tors plunged into a deep hole and came down the Maharaja of Patiala's horse getting away , and the pig also making his escape . Belore they could be got together again , a good boar broke at the bottom of the jungle , was speared by Mr. Purvis , and eventually killed . On Monday the meet was at Saroda and Mahij ra , some lour or five miles up the river . On the Saroda side , the grass was beaten away from the river , but the pig resolutely broke back , and a couple of sounders crossed the river . No. 5 heat and the second pony heat went in pursuit , and had a long run up through stiff country . No. 5 heat eventually picked up a pig which gave a pretty run , and the Maharaja of Patiala speared on Phyllis . After tiffin at Mahijra the fourth heat , Colonel Hancock and Captain Indrabir Singh ( Mr. Quin having scratched ) were started after a small last pig , which was ridden by Colo nel Hancock for over a mile , when his horse re fused a stiff cactus fence , and let in Captain Indrabir Singh , who speared alter another mile , Colonel Hancock being unable to get up again , half The next day's hunting was at Asamli , a long ride of 12 miles down the river , but the improve ment in the sport fully made up for the extra labour , and all the second chances were run off . The first three heats were all got off after one sounder , which was found lying in some cultiva tion near the jungle , a tamarisk one , chiefly in the bed of the river . No. I had a short run , and the Maharaja of Patiala speared on Phyllis . In the 2nd heat Colonel Hancock and Captain Legallais had a longish run over fencing country , each in turn on the pig . Captain Legallais finally secur ing the spear . The 3rd heat followed a good boar which had crossed the river and picked him up in open country beyond . General Gurdit Singh , getting on to him with his usual dash , speared in a few hundred yards , leaving his spear head in the boar , which was ridden on by the others and killed . The 4th and 5th heats then went out . No. 4 had a short run in some grass , Mr. Lyttleton first riding the pig , which jinked from him to Colonel Hira Singh , who speared . No. 5 was started in the river bed after a good boar , and had to get up the steep river bang in the course of their run . Here the Maharana of Dholpur on Donegal ' made a fine jump , scaling a perpendicular bank 4 or 5 feet high , alter climbing up a steep slope below it . On the high ground the pig took to some cover , where he was closely ridden by Mr. Wad dington and the Maharana of Dholpur . Stop ping in a small piece of juugle he was lost for a time ; finally he broke back , and the Maharana , getting away on him with a good start , secured the spear before the others could get on terms This finished the first round for the Gujarat Cup After tiffin the 2nd round was drawn as follows f Captain Legallais . 1st heat . General Gurdit Singh . Umpire The Maharana of Dholpur . The Maharaja of Patiala , Col. Hancock , The Maharana of Dholpur . The Maharaja of Patiala . Colonel Hira Singh . 2nd heat Umpire Dr. Bull . 3rd heat . ( Captain Legallais . Umpire General Gurdit Singh . Mr. Gray . Captain Indrabir Singh . The jungle was beaten again , but though several pig went away , no heat got on to them , and hunting was stopped early , s we had a long ride home . On the 16th , the Amliala cover was tried again , and the 1st heat got off after a small fast pig , which took a good line over fencing country , the Maharaja of Patiala , the Maharana of Dholpur and Captain Legallais each riding it in turn . Captain Legallais got a good chance in a lane , but missed his spear , though he knocked the pig over . The Maharana baving had a fall at a fence and ditch , the Maharaja of Patiala got on to the pig and speared on Phyllis . He was now left with two chances against the single chance of the rest of the competitors . The 3rd heat was the next to get off after a good boar which was beaten out of a sugarcane field at the botton of the jungle . General Gurdit Singh got on at once , and speared before any one else had a chance , but the boar crossing him brought down his horse , and the winner was obliged to retire , having damaged his wrist . The 2nd heat was got off later after another good boar which had been marked down in a sugarcane field at the top of the jungle . They had a fast run for halt a mile or so , the Maharana and Maharaja racing for the spear , which was finally secured by the Maharana of Dholpur on Sarang , General Gurdit Singh having retired , the two winners of the 1st and 2nd heats , the Maharana of Dholpur and the Maharaja of Patiala obtained the consent of the committee to divide the honours . One more heat was got off the same afternoon , the 3rd Pony heat , consisting of Captains Harrison and Indrabir Singh , Mr. Warden having scratch ed . They were started in the open , Captair Indrabir Singh took the lead and speared without being challenged . ONAY On Thursday nothing was done till the after noon , when the Saroda jungle was beaten again . The 1st Pony heat , ( Mr. Gray and the Maharaja of Patiala ) had two severe runs in the course of the afternoon , crossing the river , and losing their pig in thick cover . Finally the Maharaja of Patiala decided to scratch to Mr. Gray , who was thus left in for the final against Captain Indrabir Singh and Mr. Waddington , who had meanwhile secured his heat against the Maharana of Dholpur . They had a long run up across the river bed after a good boar , which got into thick castor oil fields , Waddington getting through first , and Mr. speared . On Friday the final heat for the Salmon Cup went to Amliala , where they failed to get on to a boar , and crossed the river to Chitrasar . Here they were started at the bottom of the jungle alter a smallish pig , which ji.ked back and got away into cover without being speared . On the return heat they were started again in the river bed , where , after a short run , the pig was raced into deep water and speared by Mr. Waddington , who thus won the Salmon Cup on his bay pony Laddie . Mr. Gray rode a gray Arab poniy Moonstone , and Captain Indrabir Singh a gray Arab pony Silver tip . ab The Point - to - Point Race for the " Tully Hog - kun ters ' Cup " was decided early the same morni before the final for the Salmon Cup . A good course was chosen from the south end of the Amliala cover , passing to the south of the village po the so of Amliala back to camp . For marking it out , a new plan was tried this year , some difficulty having been experienced last year in following the course when it was marked only by flags stuck in hedges , or in the ground . A number of charkoos ' ( men pro vided with flags whose business it is to sit in trees round the jungle and point out the direction taken by the pig ) were posted in trees along the route , and by their shouts and waving indicated the direction to be taken , the competitiors being allowed take their own line , provided that no lane was utilised for than 200 yards . The Maharana of Dholpur took the lead on Donegal almost at once , followed by Mr. Wad dington and the Maharaja of Patiala . Dr. Bull taking a wide line to the left got a fall jumping into a lane aud was practically out of the race . The Maharana maintained his lead and easily from the Maharaja of Patiala , with Mr. Waddington 3rd , Colonel Hira Singh was 4th , followed by Dr. Bull and Captain Indrabir Singh . more won were th The following were the riders and their horses - The Maharana of Dholpur on Donegal ( Waler ) . The Maharaja of Patiala on Lansdowne ( Arab ) Mr. Waddington on Stolbrown ( Waler ) . Colonel Hira Singh on U ( Waler ) . Dr. Bull on Corinthian ( Waler ) , Captain Indrabir Singh on Countess ( Hungarian ) The winner was naturally a hot favourite , Done l gal's previous performances being well known , and , his rider's light weight giving him considerable advantage over the rest of the field . Donega is , however , by no meaus merely a race - horse but an eminently qualified pigsticker , having been ridden throughout the Gujarat Cup Com . petition last year by the Maharana of Dholpur , when he won the Cup , and having also been ridden this year in several of the heats . Alter the final pony heat had been run off in the alternoon , some time was spent in hunting a very fine boar , which was slightly speared by Mr. Waddington ; but , getting into somesugarcane fields , the defied the efforts of the beaters to turn him out for some two hours . At last he slipped away , and was only picked up again in time to be lost in a thick babul jungle . This brought the meeting to a close ; no casualties of a series nature having occurred , with the exception of the unfortunate accident which deprived General Gurdit Singh of what looked like an excellent chance of securing Gujarat Cup . the Dal 4 GUZERAT CUP : PIGSTICKING MEET , We Lad now got to Monday night , and only five heats decided , so the committee recommended that the second chances of the Guzerat Cup should be cancelled . As , however , the heats bad been drawn , it was decided that this could not be done , so it was arranged to go on with the second chances of the Guzerat Cup , and not attempt to run off the Salmon Cup until it had been finished . On Tuesday a fresh start was made at Asamli , about twelve miles from camp near the village Girhum , and the first three heats of the second chances of the Cap were ordered out , viz : No.1 ( Colonel Jeewan Singh , Dr. Ball , Maha rajah of Patiala , and Mr. Burder ; Umpire , Mr. Littleton ) ; No. 2 ( Captain LeGallais , Colonel Hancock , and Mr. Warden : Mr. Quin scratched ; Umpire , Mr. Gray . ) Mr. Gray , Some new blood was present , but several sports men who came last year were , owing to various causes , unable to attend , and everybody was sorry that Mr. Younghusband and Mr. White , who Maharajah of Patiala . have done so much for the Meeting on previous occasions , were conspicuous by their absence . The place of honorary secretary was , however , most ably filled by Mr. Waddington , who was inde fatigable in making every possible arrangement for the sport and comfort of the competitors , and everybody is glad that he has the Salmon Cup to No. 3 ( Mr. White , Captain Harrison , Captain Indrabir Sing , and General Gurdit Singh ; Umpire , the Maharajah of Dholpore . ) A sounder was started almost immediately , and all three heats went off together . Hunting commenced on Saturday morning at In No. 1 the Maharajah of Patiala got the Sebjib , the first three heats of the first chances of spear on Phyllis after a short dash . In No. 2 the pig was lost in cover almost immediately . On Thursday , after the excitement of the pre vious day , we decided to have a Europe morning under the plea that it was advisable to wait for khubber before going out , but no satisfactory news was brought in , so after tiffin we made a move to Saroda , the remaining heats of the Pony Cup going out , viz - No . 1 , the Maharaja of Patiala and Mr. Gray ; Mr. Littleton scratched ; Umpire , Mr. Quin ; and No. 2 , Mr. Waddington and the Maharana of Dholepore ; Captain LeGallais scratched ; Umpire , Mr. Burder . the Guzerat Cup going out . show as a reward for all his toil and trouble and unfailing patience and good humour . They had about forty - five hunters betwen them in camp , on which neither time , trouble , nor money had been spared , and in addition to this no sportsmen can ride harder or straighter , and one cannot but admire the royal style in which they go in for the best sport we have in this country . Late in the afternoon No. 3 Heat of the Salmon Cup was run between Captain Harrison and Captain Indrabir Sing , umpired by Mr. Gray . They had a nice run , and Captain Indrabir Singh scored . In the evening the kings " produced some rare old wine , in which their healths were heartily drunk , and in the sing - song that followed they proved that pigsticking was not their only accomplishment . Patiala , who was in with two chances against the others one , again won , he would secure the Cup outright . However , the Maharana of Dhole pore did not allow bis cousin to have matters all his own way , and after a good run secured the The Point - to - Point Race was run off early on Friday morning , the field . consisting of - the Maharana of Dholepore on Donegal ( Waler ) , the Maharaja of Patiala on Lansdowne ( Arab ) , Mr. Waddington on Spotbrown ( Waler ) , Colonel Heera Singh on Ugly ( Waler ) , Dr. Buil on Corinthian ( Waler ) , and Captain indrabir Sing on Countess Sing ( Hungarian ) .
