GUJARAT PIGSTICKING . A Review of the Meeting . 1914
( FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT . )
HIMATNAGAR , March 29 , This year's meeting took place for the second time at Himatnagar , where the competitors were again the guests of H. H. the Maharajah of Idar . Hot weather meets are so often associated with that this year looked
a certain amount of discomfort ,
many competitors , so well were they after , found it difficult to realize that it was a pigsticking meet at all until the sight of , a big boar breaking cover effectually dispelled any illu sions on this score .
Twenty - two competitors for each heat came up to the scratch , out of a total entry of 29 for the Gujarat and 27 for the Salmon Cup . The entry was swelled by the sporting incursion of a strong contingent from the Meerut Tent Club , including the three members of the 3rd Skinners Horse team , which won the Muttra Cup . Both com petitions were run off on the same ground as last vear - an open maidan to the east of the palace . The day's proceedings opened with a start before dawn , so as to arrive on the ground as soon as it was light enough to intercept the pig on their way back to cover from their feeding grounds . This meant that a large number of heats could be run off in batches more or less simultaneously , and that before the sun was well up spectators and competitors were already wending the way homewards .
a
The evening's sport consisted in honking strip of good holding cover along the river's bank , so as to drive the pig into the open towards the heats who were held in readiness under cover of a line of low hillocks . It was a little unfortu nate that the going was entirely over an open maidan and the pig scarcely ever an instant lost to sight . The result was that there was seldom a chance of doing any real hunting which formed such a feature of the old Gujarat meets . How ever . things will be different next year , as His Highness intends giving the country a more sport ing character by letting the cover grow up and planting lines of cactus hedges .

The
With all the runs over a maidan , it is not sur prising that there is little incident which calls . for record . One might , however . mention the heat in which Bahadur Singh and Gover , in at tempting to emulate a lightning turn by Man derson , collided and bit the dust in company . Colonel Forbes had bad luck in the first round of the Salmon Cun . Beautifully mounted , seemed to have things all his own wav , but his right arm not having entirely recovered from his recent spill in the Kadir . he was unable to drive home his spear sufficiently to draw blood , Maharajah of Idar on his handy racing pony , Sir Hugo , scored easily in the first round of the Salmon Cup and on his form seemed likely to go far . On the second day a fine panther came out hetween two heats in waiting . Several sportsmen displayed great eagerness to be let slip , but it was noticeable that there was no general incli nation or individual initiative to ride , in the ab sence of which the animal was allowed to pass un molested . The most sporting run of the meeting was when Medlicott , who was umpiring a heat , picked up a wonnded hoar and ran him into the hills , finally killing him single handed .

Gray ,
The final heat of the Gujarat Cup resolved it self into a tussle between Gray and Manderson , who were riding the same horses on which they
got into the Kadir Cup semi - finals a week earlier . Bhabut Singh was outpaced , but almost had a chance at a jink . In the Salmon Cup , the final was over in a matter of a few seconds . Gray tent pegging a small boar . Noel's Kate had been en tered for both cups and had a couple of gruelling runs the previous evening , as a result of which she seemed to pull out a trifle stale . Gray by winning both cups in the same year has created a new record .
It was with feelings of deep regret that we learnt that Colonel Forbes is shortly to leave us . The fortunes of the meeting have come to be closely connected with his name and it is directly due to him that things have been kept going when it looked as though the meeting was likely to cease being an annual fixture , owing to lack of support ,
