SERVED in the China War of 1841-42 as Brigade Major to Lord Saltoun , and was present at the Assault and Capture of Chin - Kiang - Foo , ( mentioned in despatches ) , and at the Landing before Nankin . ( Medal and C.B. )
Served in the Sutlej Campaign of 1845 , and took part in the Action of Sobraon . ( Medal . ) Commanded the 9th Lancers during the greater part of the Campaign of 1848-49 in the Punjaub , including the Action at the passage of the Chenat , ( mentioned in despatches ) , and the Battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat , ( mentioned in despatches on both occasions ; Brevet of Lieut . - Colonel , and Two Clasps with Medal ) .
In the Indian Mutiny commanded the Cavalry at the Siege of Delhi , and also at the Relief of Lucknow , under Sir Colin Campbell ; was present at the Operations at Cawnpore , and Capture of Lucknow , and commanded the Force in Oude to the end of the Campaign . ( Created K.C.B .; promoted to rank of Major - General for Distinguished Service in the Field , and received Medal and Two Clasps ; twice Thanked by Governor - General of India in Council for his Services at Siege of Delhi , and again at the Relief of Lucknow ; also for Services at Cawnpore . )
Commanded the British Force in China during the Campaigns of 1860-61 , including the Action of Tangku , Peiho , Chow Ho , and the Capture of Pekin . Thanked by both Houses of Parliament for his Services as Commander - in - Chief ; nominated G.C.B .; Two Clasps added to former China Medal ; and received 2nd Class of the Legion of Honour .
In 1861 , was appointed to be Commander - in - Chief , Madras ; which post he held till the year 1865 , when he was appointed Quarter - Master General at the Horse Guards . This post he filled till 1870 , when he was transferred to the Command of the Aldershot Division , in which he continued to serve until his decease on March 7th , 1875 .
