( FROM OUR RACING CORRESPONDENT . ) The Grand Military Meeting was begun at Sandown Park yesterday in cold and dull weather . The lawns and paddock were crowded with visitors . There may have been in the past as many people pre sent , but I am certain that there have never been more . The arrangements made for their comfort were , as usual , admir able , but once again it is necessary to complain that before racing was over a number of motor - cars were taken out of the enclosure and allowed by the police to remain parked on the narrow lane lead ing down to Lower Green . two At The most important race on yesterday's programme was the steeplechase for the Gold Cup , run over three miles . There were 19 runners for this historic race , but only four of them were honoured with a quotation in the market on the race . They were Clashing Arms , Snow Crest , and horses from Woodland's stable , Scotch Eagle and Foxtrot . The race , as it was run , does not demand much de scription . In a very short time Clashing Arms and Foxtrot were out in front by themselves , many lengths in front of the other runners , of whom each fence seemed to take toll . These two horses were still close together , a long way in front , when the fence by the pond was reached . that point Clashing Arms was just in front , but the long hill up to the winning post was too much for him , and Foxtrot began to draw away . It seemed that he would win at his leisure , and so he actually did , but Colonel Brooke , on his own horse , Commonside , finished with an amazing burst of speed , and was at the winning post only two lengths behind Foxtrot . Clashing Arms , who was very weary , was third , and Uncle Jack fourth . Highball , Roman Hackle , and Mask - on were the only other of the starters to complete the Scotch Eagle fell at the second fence , but Snow Crest stood up for a mile and a half . Foxtrot , who is by Light Brigade , was purchased by Captain Lumsden after he had won a selling race at Hurst Park early in the season . course . 2.55 . Mr Stanyforth refused Winner bred by Mrs Cradock ; trained by P Woodland , at Cholderton . ( Off at 2.58 . ) CLASHING ARMS . Third time did not pay for all in the case of Clashing Arms in the Military God Cup , though Lord Killeen can be congratu lated on riding so well and getting the horse round , for the first time in the par ticular race , without mishap . Clashing Arms ran his usual forcing race , but he lacks his former finishing ability , and the distance was always a little beyond his best . His tactics unsettled several of his oppo nents , but they seemed to be just the sort to suit Foxtrot , who likes to bowl along and is a sound stayer . He is an ideal r.de for an amateur . Clashing Arms was in front three fences from home , but Captain Lumsden then challenged , and took the lead before taking the last jump . He had two lengths to spare from Lieut . - Colonel Brooke's mount , Commonside , who was a hundred yards behind three furlongs from home , but made up a tremendous lot of ground and finished strongly against the easing winner . It was an unusually big field , and all but six came to grief . Scotch Eagle was one of the early tumblers . Uncle Jack finished fourth , but he seemed to need the - sharpen ing - up which the race would give him after a year's absence . Percy Woodland's plan of running nearly all his entries proved profitable , for he saddled the leading pair . Foxtrot's owner - rider , Captain H. Lums den , is in the 12th Lancers . Foxtrot's rise in life this season has been notable , since . he changed hands for 270 guineas after winning a seller last December at Hurst Park for Brennand's Thirsk stable . |
