The Prince of Wales and Prince Henry , who had watched the race away down the course , were loudiy cheered as they returned to the stands . Then came the piece de resistance , the Grand Military Gold Cup , and , with Clashing Arms seem ing to dominate the situation , long odds were demanded by the Rng . Bar a fall Cal Anthony's horse was , of course , a certainty , and so well did he fence until less than a mile from home that his sup porters were on excellent terms with them selves . However , Mr McCreery , who rado Annie Darling , pluckily stuck to the favourite , and his perseverence had its reward , for , at a fence past the railway , Clashing Arms made a mistake , and shou Capt Vivian out of the saddle . This left Annie Darling in dear command , but Col Paynter , although on beaten horse , brought Broken Wand within striking dis tance at the last fence , but w thout avail , for the leader had something left in her , whereas Broken Wand , swerving from distress , parted company with his rider in the run - in . Thus Annie Darling went on to win in a canter from Condor , who finished strongly , but lacked speed . Mr McCreery is to be congratulated on riding an exceedingly fine and plucky race , while Capt Vivian , although meeting w th mishap , kept his difficult mount well in band , and only just a bit of bad luck robbed him of victory . a badly The finish of the Gole 2.55 GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP ( S'chase ) , £ 495 : 3m . Owner ( Started at 2.59 . Winner trained by H Bletsoe , at East Ilsley . ) STARTING PRICES : 5 to 2 on Clashing Arms , 5 to 1 agst Broken Wand , 10 to 1 agst Condor , and 100 to 8 bar three ( onered ) . THE BETTING - Odas of 3 to 1 were first asked for on Clashing Arms , but later backers were able to traue at 5 to 2. Nothing was seriously backed to beat the favourite , though fair sums went on Broken Wand at and Condor was befriended for small sums at " tens . " sixes , THE RACE . Clashing Arms showed the way to Annie Darling , Marcoglass , and Broken Wand , with Baby Dear last . Short Knock fell at the second obstacle , and Baby Dear at the open ditch near the stands . Annie Darling joined Clashing Arms after going two miles , and , the favourite blundering and unseating his rider four fences from home , Mr McCreery's mare was followed by Broken Wand . latter's rider slipped off soon after jumping the final fence , leaving Annie Darling to finish thirty lengths in front of Condor ; Marcoglass was a bad third . Broken Wand , remounted , was the only other to complete the course . Time by Benson's chronograph , 6min 37 3-5sec . The The Grand Military Gold Cup winner , Annie Darling , a beautiful jumper , is not much more than a hunter , but Mr McCreery has won several minor races on her . She was going well with Clashing Arms and fairly bustling up the favourite when he fell about a mile from the finish . GRAND MILITARY ( AT SANDOWN PARK . ) OUTSIDER WINS THE GOLD CUP DEFEAT OF CLASHING ARMS TWO WINS FOR MR H. BROWN . Though the sky was grey and the light bad , no rain fell , and thus the first stage of the Grand Military Meeting was carried through in comfortable conditions . The attendance was one of the largest seen anywhere for a con siderable time past , and seldom can there have been more people in the members ' enclosures . In other respects , too , the gathering was highly successful , and notably with regard to the size of the fields , which were far stronger all round than could possibly have been antici . pated . It was not a good day for backers , however , the Grand Military Gold Cup bring won by an outsider , while another successful horse started quite friendless in the market , and a third figured as a 10 to 1 chance . Clashing Arms was of such superior class to his opponents for the Gold Cup that it was surprising to find so many as six turn out against him . He had an experienced rider in Capt Vivian in the saddle , and the odds of 5 to 2 demanded seemed perfectly reason able . Broken Wand , who was purchased b Col Paynter after his success at Wolverhamp ton earlier in the week , was second favourite , with Condor the only other seriously con sidered . the it Yet the assumed " good thing was destined to come undone . Clashing Arms , as usual , went straight to the front , hot Annie Darling whose owner , Mr R. L. McCreery , took mount was never far behind . She jumped perfectly throughout , and when she joined the favourite less than a mile from home was obvious that she would make a race of it , even though Clashing Arms displayed better speed cn the flat . She jumped two or three fences almost side by side with him , and at the fourth obstacle from home a great shout went up , for the hot favourite blundered on landing , shooting his rider out of the saddle . Thus Clashing Arms made a surprising exit , and Annie Darling was left with nothing more to do than take the last three obstacles safely a task she accomplished quite comfortably . Col Paynter brought Broken Wand along between the last two fences in a manner sug gesting some danger , but the mare was clearly holding the upper hand when Broken Wand swerved after landing over the last fence and caused Col Paynter to lose his balance . The gallant sportsman was quickly in the saddle again , but meanwhile Condor and Marcoglass had passed him , and so claimed the honours . The result , needless to add , was a most unexpected one , but Annie Darling , whose clever jumping came as a revelation , really de served her triumph . minor BEAUFORT HUNT A WIN FOR THE PRINCE ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION on The prettily situated course at Sherston , in Wiltshire , was thronged with spectators Saturday , many of the general public probably being attracted by the fact that the Prince of Wales was riding . The meeting was the annual one of the Beaufort Hunt , and right royal weather , in contrast to previous years , ruled . The Prince had no tuck in the Beaufort Hunt Cup , where his mount , Little Christy , refused at the first fence , but in the Twelfth Royal Lancers Cup good fortune came his way . He had ridden a good race in an attempt to beat a strong favourite , and only failed by a length and a half to pass the post first . He showed fine horsemanship two fences from home , when Kinlark pecked badly , and was required o make up many lengths in the straight . Mr RL McCreery was called before the Stewards for failing to carry his weight cloth , and was disqualified The Stewards held an enquiry as to the weight carried by Mr McCreery , and , having called him and Mr Bletsoe ( the trainer of Annie Darling ) before them a heard ther vidence , they severely cautioned both for grose relessness in carrying the wron weight . Falls were numerous , and in not one race did the whole of the competitors complete the course . Included in the Duke of Beaufort's party were H.R.H. the Prince of Wales , Duchess of Beau fort , Lord Lonedale , Lady Marv Cambridge , Marquis of Worcester , Countess St Germains , Lord Londesborough , and Lord Dalmeny .
