CHAMPION POLO CUP FINAL .
HARLEQUINS WIN AT
HURLINGHAM .
SURPRISE DEFEAT OF EASTCOTT .
In a crowded polo programme which in cluded deciding games in no fewer than five tournaments on Saturday the outstanding event was the fight for the Champion Cup at Hurlingham , which was witnessed by the Queen and Prince Henry , her Majesty at its close presenting the much - prized trophy Lord Wodehouse , whose Harlequins team beat Earl Hoppings Eastcott side by 4 goals to 3 .
to
The victory of the Harlequins was a sur prise , for had the match been played under handicap they would have received tive goals start from their opponents , but Eastcott were much below their form , and as Hop ping , on whom everything hinged , struck one of those bad patches which al athletes experience in turn , the Harlequins had their chance , and they made the most of it . As the game was played they were perhaps fortunate to win , but , nevertheless , their victory was extremely popular .
IN GREAT FORM .
While the skipper of the one side was so completely off his game , Lord Wodehouse , on the other hand , was in great form , and , splendidly supported by Commander Wise , whose long and true hitting was a feature of a game that was generally disappointing in view of its importance , and possessed very few thrills . The young Lancers officers , the brothers . McCreery , played well together in the front of the fray , out the only really reliable man on the losing side was Major Vivian Lockett , though Nelson hit well and with good direction .
Andrada scored Eastcott's first goal in the opening chukker , and in the second Hop ping and Nelson put on further points , but that proved to be the sum total of their success , while the Harlequins gradually pulled up until , when ponies were changed for the fifth time , the account had been balanced . The sixth chukker went against Lord Wodehouse's side , but a goal through for them , and that proved to be the winning point , for there was no score in the final chukker , though Eastcott narrowly failed to equalise . The teams were : Harloquins . - Capt R I McCreery , W S Mc Creery , Wing Comdr P K Wise , and Lord . Wodehouse ( back ) . Eastcott . - J D Nelson , EW Hopping , Major VN Lockett , and M Ardrada ( back ) .
