Laven Poit & Port Llighchare Inh .. 1872 8 . NINTH ( QUEEN'S ROYAL ) LANCERS POINT TO POINT STEEPLECHASE . The officers of the above regiment , now stationed at the Fulford Barracks , York , had a point - to - point steeple chase yesterday . The prize was a Challenge Cup , value £ 100 , presented by Colonel H. A. Bushman , C.B. , for all horses bona fide the property of officers of the 9th Lancers , and to be ridden by officers serving , or who have served in the regiment ; catch weights over 12st 71b . There were nineteen entries , all of which started . The course was across a fairly good hunting country , from Sutton - on - Forest to Orayke , a distance of about four - and - a - half - miles . The track was chosen by . Mr. E. Lycett Green , M.F.H. York and Ainsty , and although heavy going , it proved satisfactory . How ever , Churston landed home easily by ten lengths ; about six lengths dividing second and third . At the conclusion of the race about 200 sat down to a splendid luncheon , provided by the officers , in a large marquee situated in a field near the winning post , at the village of Crayke , at the conclusion of which the officers were heartily cheered . We may add that the first point - to point regimental steeple chase in this district was pro moted by this regiment in 1873 , when Major Wetherall's Jumping Moses won . Mr. E.
