" " Kabul , 1879 " Kandahar , 1880 , " " Afghanistan . 1878-80 , " Modder River , " " Relief of Kimberley . " Paardeberg . " South Africa , 1899-1902 . " HISTORY AND TRADITIONS . The regiment was raised in 1715. For 86 years it served in Ireland . In 1806-9 it was employed at the attack on Buenos Ayres , at the Walcheren expedition , and at the siege of Flushing . It served in the Peninsular War 1811-3 and was at Arroyos dos Molinos , Badajos , and several skirmishes . It served at Punniar in 1843. and in the first Sikh War distinguished itself at Sobraon . In the second Sikh War it fought at Chilianwallah and Goojerat . Through It served the Indian Mutiny its services were pre - eminent . through the siege of Delhi , at the relief of Lucknow , and the siege and capture of the city , as well as the subsequent opera tions It served in the Afghan War 1878-80 , and took part . in Lord Roberts ' famous march to Kandahar , and is the only British cavalry regiment entitled to the honours of Charasiah , Kabul , 1879 , Kandahar , 1880. During the South African War it was present at the fierce battles leading up to the capture of Pretoria , and added still further to its distinguished record . 21st ( Empress of India's ) LANCERS . BATT HONOURS . Khartoum . " HISTORY AND TRADITIONS . The present 21st ( Empress of India's ) Lancers was formed from volunteers from the Bengal European . Cavalry , when the forces of the Honourable East India Company were finally transferred to the Crown in 1862 . From the formation of the regiment until 1897 it was known . as the 21st Hussars , the title being then changed to 21st Lancers . Three regiments had previously borne the num . It erical title . The last of these had seen good service . went through much deadly campaigning in San Domingo in 1795-8 . when engaged against the negro revolutionists under Toussaint L'Ouverture . A portion of the regiment saw hard service before Monte Video in 1807 , and also on the Kaffir Frontier in 1812 , and again in 1814-5 . A detachment of the regiment was in garrison at St. Helena when the Emperor . Napoleon was there . It was disbanded in 1819. The present regiment formed part of the British force under Sir Herbert Kitchener in his successful Nile campaign of 1897-8 , during which it rendered signal service on many occasions . It more particularly distinguished itself by its brilliant charge in the crowning victory at Omdurman . For its gallantry on this occasion the present title of the regiment was conferred upon it .
