The Neptun Gate . LIEUTENANT H. DURANT , 9th Lancers , whose death in action is reported from France , received his com mission from the ranks of his regiment . He left . England as squadron sergeant - major in the squadron commanded by the late Captain F. O. Grenfell , V.C. , and was badly wounded in the famous charge of the 9th Lancers in the early days of the war . He re ceived the Médaille Militaire , the D.C.M. , and in December , 1914 , a commission in his regiment . Lieu tenant Durant , who was one of the best revolver shots in the Army , was greatly respected in his regiment as a most gallant and capable officer . His death in the trenches is the end of a very remarkable career , which would undoubtedly have led to much higher promotion if he had lived .
