The first beat took place in the jheel , but as only one pig broke that enabled a heat to be run off ( viz . No. 1 ) , an adjourn ment was made to the grass jungle on the right front of Gurmuktesar : here pig were plentiful , and this continued to be the hunting ground for the remainder of the meeting . No. 6 and No. 11 ties were very unfortunate in not finding pig - to their taste - for each day .

HIS HIGHNESS THE MAHARAJAH BHUP BAHADUR leaves Cooch Behar on the 30th instant on a short tour and returns to town on the 5th of April next .
PROGRAMME OF HIS HIGHNESS ' TOUR .
The final tie was run off on the morning of the 12th :
Mr. Baden - Powell's Patience ( winner ) .
Thus ended a most pleasant and successful meet , inasmuch as the weather , though warm , was not " too utterly " hot , and what with songs and flutes , " Kadir Soothers " and M. Mac Dou gall's Pigsticker's Joy " ( in a brown jug ) , one came to the conclusion that there is a bright side to life ; and successful it was through the untiring energy of the Honorary Secretary
Mr. Johnston .

Hagarene took the lead after the first start and a slight check while the pig broke cover , and kept it , after a strong and very fast boar . The run was chiefly through long tussocky grass jungle , with a few open patches of rough ground , but very fair as a test of pigstickers . Through this then the pig led his pursuers at a great pace for about 2 mile , when finding himself very closely pressed he headed for the Boreegunga stream and launched himself into it , followed immediately by Hagarene , who with her rider , and to the astonishment of both , found themselves exploring the depths of about 20 feet of water . pig meantime turning back made his way along the bank to some grass , where after a short burst he was run up to by Patience and speared .
