Trooper Tommy Atkins on the Middlesex Veomanry
at Hampton Court .
N the royal paddocks at Hampton Court ( which holiday resort is reached so pleasantly by the palatial new saloon steam - boat Queen Elizabeth ) , the Middlesex Yeomanry ( Duke of Cambridge's Hussars ) were encamped for ten days during July . The regiment marched in on July 17 , after their training had completed the men were inspected by Colonel Dickson ,
commanding at Reading , and who , as command ing officer of the 5th Dragoon Guards , was as popular with the officers and men as any colonel in the Army . The manner in which the Yeomen turned out was in every way deserving of the high praise bestowed by the inspecting officer , and their drill showed that the officers must have taken great pains and the men shown great attention in order to attain such proficiency in so short a time . After returning from the field the men were a good deal better off than Tommy Atkins is after a hard field - day , for they had only to hand over their horses to the grooms , and then spend the interval before lunch in showing their fair cousins - or , perhaps , nearer relations the picturesque points of the camp . Soon after three o'clock a move was made to the paddocks on the other side of the road , where an
arena in which the men were destined to show their prowess had been roped off . All points of vantage were quickly occupied , and by the time
T.R.H. the Duke and Duchess of Teck arrived there must have been two or three thousand people present . Their Royal High nesses were received by Colonel Mitford , com manding the Regiment ( whose portrait is given by the P.I.P. " Trooper Tommy " Artist ) , and
a guard of honour , and then the work of the afternoon began . The judges for each event were Captain Tomblings and Lieutenant
Mussenden , 8th Hussars , and Sergeant - Major Bradshaw , 10th Hussars , while Captain Rawson , M.Y.C. , superintended the arrangements gener
ally .
The first competition , heads and posts ,
was won by Trooper Spinks , who " cut down " in very good style . Trooper Gosheron won the lemon - cutting , and a very popular victory was

The Middlesex
had the satisfaction of taking three , which must be admitted is a fair share . This efficiency in military sports is due in a great measure to the untiring efforts of the brigade - adjutant , Captain Forrester Colvin , 9th Lancers , who is as much liked as was his predecessor , Major Hippisley , of the Greys , which is saying a good deal.-W. YEOMANRY TOURNAMENT . The Middlesex Yeomanry Cavalry ( the Duke of Cambrilge's Hussars ) , who have been encamped in the Home Park , Hampton Court , for the past 10 days undergoing their annual training , finished their operations by giving yester day a grand military tournament in one of the large paddocks in Bushey - park , which was lent by the Queen for the purpose . The troops were inspected in the morning by Lieutenant - Colonel Kenyon - Mitford , who expressed
himself highly pleased with the smartness of the men on parade . The tournament attracted a large gathering . Her Royal Highness Princess Mary Adelaide , who was accompanied by the Duke of Teck , was present , and at the close of the day's proceedings her Royal Highness gave the prizes away to the successful competitors . The Middlesex Yeomanry band was present , and played a selection during the tournament . The Yeomanry strike their tents to - day , when three of the troops return to London and the fourth to Brighton
