Roc in pl . 05 co . o of Mr. Bodimngfold for s for Monday the 3 of Juno 1706 . 22nd November 1886 V WITH THE ESSEX HOUNDS . Monday's work was on the grass abou . twenty maes as the crow flies , a fair stretch of country intervening between the two scenes . A fox from Nazing Park at 11.15 , if hounds could have owned him ( which they utterly failed to do ) , would have thrown late comers , Galley Hill skirters , In the pre and Nazing Coppice expectants entirely out of it . liminary excitement of a fox away , which left not a trace behind , the first whip's horse gave him a nasty cropper over an insignificant piece of timber . Back to Nazing Coppice , and a fox was viewed away at once in the direction of Galley Hill . He obtained a start , as hounds were some time before they came out of covert ; but when once clear of it , they drove along at a good pace for Deer Park , straight through it , and on through Scalter Bushes , away down the hill for Obelisk Wood , which was not touched . From here to Waltham Abbey nothing but grass and easy fences to keep you from touch of hounds , who were travelling fast enough to leave you two fields to the bad if you stayed to open an obstinate gate or to catch a riderless horse and to lose you your chance altogether if you courted a cropper or toyed with a fence . Within a field of the New Inn at Waltham Abbey he was running in view , and you would have given him another three fields at the outside for leading the dance ; but he was as deceptive as a stout stag refreshed from a bathe in a stream . A taste of the River Lea , or the smell of the gunpowder works , must have put new life into him . Running the banks of the river for about a mile and a half , he took a line to the right , through Monkhams . And no better compliment could he have paid to its owner , now Master of the East Essex , who , with his two brothers , had chosen this day for a peep at their old country . Would they were always with us is a wish that will find ready echo in every heart that follows the E.H. Down to and crossing the Waltham and Nazing - road , they went straight over the opposite hill , entering a narrow plantation on its crest , where some think we changed . Hounds raced on as keen as ever , over and into a rotten - banked brook , as your horse took you , and exactly 50 minutes from leaving Nazing Coppice our fox was marked to ground in a.drain in the garden of that much - respected sportsman , Mr. Bury . Flasks and sandwich cases were brought out , and hearty congratulations exchanged , while a terrier was sent for , which quickly evicted the fox , who as quickly reached the sanctum of Galley Hill and baffled his pursuers . No fox could have taken a better line - no , not if you had asked him - than the one we got away with from Deer Park about 2 p.m. Grass every yard of the way from there to the forest ; the line through Scalter Bushes and Spratt's hedgerow ; well - gated fields , and what more did you want than a fair start ? About three miles as the crow flies in 17 minutes is average travelling . Some little time was spent in the forest , to which our fox was evidently a stranger , as he kept in one corner , but finding hounds rather too pressing in their attentions , much to our satisfaction he took to the open again , crossing the road below Copt Hall Green into Warlies Park . Hounds got on fresh terms with him at Obelisk Wood , running well up to Galley Hill , and after twenty minutes ' patient hunting pulled down as crafty an old dog fox as ever dodged huntsman and hounds for 1 hour and 40 minutes . Only twenty remained to hear the shrill " Who - whoop ! they have got him ! -they are round him ! How they worry and tear him down , MCADAM . A stout hill fox when they found him , Now he is a hundred tatters of brown . " CREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS from JULY 1st , 1885 . A resolution conveying the cordial thanks of the members to Mr. R. B. Colvin for the satisfactory manner in which he has hunted the country this season was passed unanimously . Mr. Colvin will hunt the country on the same terms next season . 778 .- " C'est l'Empereur ! " - H . DE T. GLAZEBROOK . EAST ESSEX HOUNDS . The East Essex Hounds met at the Cock Inn , Boreham , on Saturday morning in dull weather , but the absence of rain brought out a large com pany . Among those present in addition to the master ( Mr. R. B. Colvin ) were Mr. W. J. Beadel , M.P. , Miss Chalk , Mr. F. F. Colvin , Mr. Colvin , Capt . and Mrs. Townsend , Mr. J. Oxley Parker , Mr. C. W. Parker , the Misses Parker , Mr. and Mrs. Percy Reid ( Kelvedon ) . Mr. Thos . Usborne , Lieut . G. H. Tremayne ( 13th Hussars ) , Mr. G. Hilliard , Mr. R. Crampton ( Shoebury ness ) , Mr. Garrad Baker , Mr. C. E. Ridley , Mr. Alfred Poole , Mr. T. H. Ridley , Mr. T. Quilter , Mr. and Mrs. W. Ward , Mr. F. Lewin , Mr. J. Dixon ( Boreham ) , Mr. J. Tabor , Mr. Butler ( Witham ) , Mr. Lucas , Mr. Craven . ( 13th Hussars ) , Mr. Hilton , and many others , including several officers from Colchester . The first cover drawn was at Toppinghoe Hall , where a ring was run round and the fox lost . An adjournment was then made to Col. Tufnell Tyrell's park , which was drawn blank . The field then travelled cross country to a cover near Langford , and Reynard being discovered , a smart run ensued . It was of short duration , however , for his Highness ran to earth and was dug out . The day being now well advanced , nothing fur ther was done . FOXHUNTING IN ESSEX . - The regular hunting season has been entered upon this week by the several packa of foxhounds in Essex . Excellent preliminary sport was enjoyed with the Essex Hounds , as in the twenty - five days devoted to cub hunting ten brace and a half of cub were disposed of . On the occasion of the opening meet at Matching Green , on Monday , a capital run of forty five minutes ended in a kill in the open , and a second fox came to grief after being hunted in cover for about an hour . On Wednesday a capital day was experienced in the Roding country . One of three foxes found in Canfield Hart was killed after a short run . Wilson's Springs supplied another fox , which was lost after a fast run of fifteen minutes , and another was started from Row Wood , but made good its escape near Tukeley Forest after au hour's slow hunting . There was a large gathering of the members of the East Essex on the opening day on Thursday at Felix Hall , Kelvedon , where Mr R. B. Colvin , the new master , entertained the company to break fast . About three hundred horsemen were present , and the scene on the lawn recalled memories of past days when the head of the Western family occupied the family seat . The Essex Union had their first day in the Dengle Hundred country on Thursday , when the meet was at Stow Bullocks , and a capital day's eport was experienced . HUNTING BREECHES . - For perfect fitting breeches and correct style go to Thomas and Son , Sporting Tailors and breeches Makers , 48 , South Molton - street , W. - ADYT . Mr Cecil Colvin promises to take a large share in the Town Hall if it is to be erected by subscription . This , in addition to the selling of a piece of land at a reasonable price , will give the subscribers a good start , so that in my opinion there should be no difficulty in having a good and cheap hall in Waltham Abbey . " LINES PICKED UP IN THE ARMAGH COURT HOUSE AFTER A SITTING OF THE LAND COMMISSION : " Gone from the sweets of office , Gone from the head of affairs , Gone - in the head - they tell us ; Gone and no one cares ! Gone , not to join the angels ; Gone to study the past ; Gone into opposition , Gladstone gone at last ! Gone - we may trust for ever ; Gone whither - none can tell ; Gone - let us hope to Heaven , There are demons enough in Hell ! " |
