This was an inaugural day ( if I may use the term ) as regards sport for the new year , and every credit is due to the Honorary Secretary for the success of the day's card , and the evening's sport provided . The attendance was large and would shame that at other stations where the meetings are larger and more important . The piece de resistance in the day's card were the two chases , one for ponies and the other for horses This speak , well consider ing steeplechasing is fast declining in India . This fact sets me moralizing , and I am disposed to ask what is the cause of this . Is it that the horses of now - a - days lack the stamina of yore , or is it that gentlemen riders lack the spirit of their ancestors , and prefer a ride on the flat to the all exhilarating one between the flag ? The all horse chase concentrated a further interest in it , inas much as the winner secured for his owner Colonel Bushman , C. B. , handsome cup . The donor must have been indeed , gratified at the entries , and again at the effort made by each and all to secure bis gift , for the horses came and went like so many characters in a play , the victory being only attained by Beeswing after a desperate struggle , Major Scott Chisholme had the sympathy of all , in the troubles that came so early for his horse and its rider . But for this accident Whalebone was sure to have given a good account of him self , especially as he was steered by such a good man as Mr. Little , while on the other hand Mr. Jenner is to be congratulated on having ridden the winner in both the chases as also that in the Regimental Polo Scurry The 9th Lancers continue to maintain their reputation as a hard riding regiment most satisfactorily , and we should like to see more of onr cavalry regiments of the same MOHA FLY F standard . The open race brought six very likely animals to the post , all of whom had more or less of the public confidence , but once the flag fell , Mr Beid's handsome more Jessie soon set all anticipatious at rest , for she came away at the start and won easily . The match between Wee and Pipestem was a very interesting one , was the former a Though Major Gough had the Regimental Cup snatched from him at the last moment he was comforted for this disappointment ; by scoring the Adelaide Stakes on his horse Sugar Plum in very fine form .
