Lieut . - Genl . W T. HUGHES , C.B. Col. SARSFIELD GREENE , C.B. , R.H.A. Major M. RAMSAY . THE TURF . UMBALLA SPRING MEETING , 1881 . STEWARDS : Captain C. TROWBB , 9th Lancers , Honorary Secretary . First Day , Wednesday , 9th March 1881 . Once more on the old Umballa course , the scene of the triumphs o old Chang and Exeter . What a fatal name the latter has been to many a one . It was after the victory of Exeter over Chang and a large field in 1878 , when Chang carried a great deal more than his saddle - con tained , that the glories of Umballa were eclipsed , and the grand stand , one of the finest in India , with its beautiful view , its weighing and dressing rooms , and every conceivable convenience , and all provided from the profits derived from the large lotteries and the Derby Sweeps , were all put under a ban . However , this has only been temporary , and last winter saw all the old traditions restored , and such a meeting as Umballa is accustomed to was held then . The 9th Lancers is not a coops to let such traditions die out , and to their presence in Umballa is due the holding of the present meeting , got up virtually at the eleventh hour ; as also is it due as much to the fact of the sporting and hospitable 9th being in the station as to its central position that Um balla was elected as the scene for the polo tournament now being held here , and of which I shall send you full details as soon as the matches are all played off , and the victorious regiment is proclaimed . The course was not quite so soft as to please those whose horses have tender legs ; but in all other respects there was nothing to cavil at . The first race set down on the card was one over sticks , and for which Changed Hands was regarded as the absolute winner , but a great pot was upset , and Advance , a rank outsider , who only sold for a pony in the lotteries , won easily . For the Tom Thumb Stakes , Spot on his Rawulpindi form was installed in the post of honor , and some one must have bitterly rued the misplaced confidence when he struck his colors to Gazelle . This latter is not the Gazelle , but is a ches nut country - bred belonging to Major Cook . Nigel , brought all the way from Rawalpindi , who held a very prominent place in the betting , and who would undoubtedly have finished in a good place , was not in the race . The horse was restive while being saddled , and there was a little delay in the starting ; but the starter refused to wait for the horse to come up , and sent away the field without him . It is pos sible for a starter to be a little too particular ; as it is Nigel's sporting owner has many sympathisers . Salisbury , who went for a song in the lottery , came out at the post and won a very fine race . The starter was evidently seized with remorse for his treatment of Nigel , as he failed to turn up at his post for the Grand Military Chase . For this event five went down to the post , and by common accord affected a start . Ace of Trumps , alias King Harold , fetched a high price in the lottery , his backers evidently being actuated by a regard to contingencies . Hector , who was next in demand , and who , though he ran indifferently in the early part of the race , was soon going in his usual style and overhauling his leaders , would have won , had the ori ginal distance of the race not been , without any reason , reduced by mile , but only got second place to Oliver Twist . Fitzroy seems to have disposed of his field in the St. Leger very easily . Fariz proved himself to be a grand pony by his performance in the Pony Chase . Meeting all the cracks of his class he won as he liked under the skilful piloting of Captain Cholmondely . FIRST RACE . - Hurdle race , for all horses . C. W. A. The flag fell to a good start , when Mr. Alexander took Changed Hands to the front , and led the field out merrily for half the distance , Advance and Troubadour lying some distance back in his wake , the rest out of it . The riders had to arrange their own start and got away well together , when Lawyer was taken to the front with Oliver Twist and King Harold at his heels . Hector fencing very unsteadily was losing much ground , but warming up he began to overhaul his horses . The others were going too fast for him to regain ground , and Oliver Twist had just past the post when Hector had got to within three lengths of him . A good third . SIXTH RACE . - Pony Chase .
