Owner A good start was effected , but after going half the distance the result , bar accident , looked a moral for Churston , although Bonfire would have made a better run of it had he not bungled at the last fence . How Lever , Churston landed home easily by ten lengths ; about six lengths dividing second and third . At the conclusion of the race about 200 sat down to a splendid luncheon , provided by the officers , in a large marquec situated in a field near the winning post , at the village of Crayke , at the conclusion of which the officers were heartily cheered . We may add that the first Point - to point Regimental Steeple Chase in this district was pro moted by this regiment in 1873 , when Major Wetherall's Jumping Moses won . Mr. E. Colonel Abadie and the officers of the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers on Wednesday night gave a grand ball in the Assembly Rooms , York , when about six hundred ladies and gentlemen were present . The memory of the last ball given by the officers of this regiment , which took place in 1873 , still lingers in the minds of many citizens who were present at that fashionable gathering . Since that time the regiment has seen much active service , and " Charasiah , " " Kabul , " " Kandahar , " and " Afghanistan , " have been added to the list of honours achieved . In November , 1885 , the regiment returned to England , and was quartered at Shorncliffe until August last , when , upon departure of the 3rd Hussars , the 9th Lancers were ordered to York , and have since that time occupied the cavalry barracks , and during their short stay made many friends . the The ball which took place on Wednesday night passed off most successfully , and no doubt , like the former one , will long be remembered . No expense was spared , and everything was done that could in any way add grandeur to the occasion or increase the comfort of the guests . Just above the main entrance to the ball - room was a half star of swords , and the entrances to the side - rooms were surmounted by several lances . The sight presented on entering the ball room was brilliant in the extreme . The doorways were handsomely draped with Eastern curtains , above the entrance were the regimental colours , flanked by national flags , the massive colours on each side being upholstered in blue , and decorated with lances . The numerous columns along the sides of the rooms , which , even unadorned , add so greatly to the beauty of the building , were all tastefully decorated . The lower portions of these columns were upholstered with white muslin relieved with coloured bows , and above this were affixed trophies of swords , lances , and groupings of national flags , and others bearing the crest of the regiment . The chief decoration was un doubtedly that which beautified the far end of the room , and attracted the attention of the dancers immediately they entered . This consisted of a large shield emblazoned with the crest and honours f the regiment , surmounted by a Royal silk banner , groups of flags of all nations , flanked by large s of swords . The effect of the swords as they glittered in the gaslight , and the bright - coloured flags , gave the room a very picturesque and imposing appear ance , which was enhanced in no small degree by the teful disposition of ornamental shrubs . The small om was divided into three by groups of tropical The centre portion - that opposite to the orchestia - was reserved for dancing , the portions on each side being handsomely furnished as drawing Card - rooms were also provided for those who wished to enjoy " a quiet rubber , " and indeed the arrangements on the whole were of the most com plete character , and reflected the greatest credit on Lieut . C. Bishop , who superintended the whole of the decorations and arrangements for the ball . Supper was laid in the Festival Concert - room , which had been completely transformed by the decorator and presented a most charming appearance as a salle à manger . To the guests entering from the ballroom the orchestra presented a very picturesque and bril liant appearance . In the centre was a large arch draped with blue and amber and decorated with swords and lances . On the top was placed the crest of the regiment , with national flags and stars of swords on either side . In the centre of the arch was a large figure representing Victory , with the statues of Terpsichore and Bacchus on each side . In the front of the orchestra was displayed the regimental plate , and this added greatly to the appearance of the room . Amongst the numerous articles exhibited . were the regimental cup , presented by Major McKenzie , the gold Adelaide vase , presented by Colonel the Hon . Legge , Colonel Abadie's cup , the cup won by representatives in a polo tournament in India versus the 10th Lancers , two cups of Burmese workmanship , won in 1877 and 1878 , the cup won at Calcutta in a polo tournament , cup presented by Cap tain Hozier , and others , which were arranged with excellent effect . The gallery front and the doors were draped with blue , and in front of the gallery were affixed the Royal Arms , flanked by a number of lances and stars of swords . rooms .
