WEDDING FESTIVITIES AT HENHAM HALL .
PRESENTATION TO LADY GWENDOLINE ROUS .
ANNUAL HENHAM HUNT PUPPY SHOW . The approaching marriage of Lady Gwendoline , Rous to Major Colvin afforded the tenantry of the two estates at Henham and Carlton an opportuni ty , of which they were quick to avail themselves , of showing the very high esteem in which they hold the Countess of Suradbroke and the family . The welfare of their people has always had a warm place in the hearts of the occupants of Henham Hall , and in the recent years of agricultural depression the Earl and Countess have shown this in a highly practical manner On the announce ment of the marriage therefore , the first thought which occurred to the tenantry was how best they could show their appreciation of the many kind nesses received at the hands of their landlord , and landlady , and the individual acts of benevolence of Lady Gwendoline . The agents of the estates , Mr A. Trotter and Mr. C. A. Creasey , readily undertook to collect subscriptions a work with which very little labour was connected , so heartily did everybody approached respond , and the tenantry were joined by a number of neighbours , who were glad of the opportunity afforded to show their share in appreciation of the worth of the Countess and her family .
As an agreeable foretaste of the wedding festivi ties of Wednesday next the tenantry and others were entertained at the Hall on Saturday to a sumptuous luncheon , partaken of by a company of about sixty in the handsomely appointed dining room . The tables were loaded with substantial fare and choice delicacies , set off with a beautiful collection of hot - house plants , and at the head of the festive board sat the Countess , with the Earl of Stradbroke , Lady Gwendoline Rous and Major Colvin on her ladyship's right , and on her left Lady Adela Cochrane and Lady Hilda McNeill .
After the luncheon Mr. A. TROTTER said when it became known that Lady Gwendoline was about to be married , the tenantry and tradesmen on the Henham estate unanimously expressed a wish to present her ladyship with a wedding gift , and he had the greatest pleasure in asking Lady Gwen doline's acceptance of a handsome silver centre piece . [ Applause . ] He was sure her ladyship would regard the present , not from its intrinsic value , but from the light of the good feeling which prompted the subscribers - a feeling which had always existed between the tenants and neighbours and the House of Hepham , and which he believed was stronger than it had ever been . When Lady Gwendoline left Henham they would all feel that her departure caused a great blank . The poor would lose a true and generous friend , and the sick and sorrowing a warm sympathiser . [ Ap plause . ] Their great loss would be Major Colvin's gain , and in proposing the health of Lady Gwendoline he coupled with it that of the Major , wishing them all the happiness the world could bestow .
These sentiments were very cordially endorsed by the company , and the handsome centre - piece was placed before the Countess . It bore the following inscription : - " Presented by the Tenants on the Henham estate and others , to Lady Gwendoline Rous on her marriage with Richard Beale Colvin , Esq . , June 26th , 1895. " Accom panying was a list of the subscribers ' handsomely illuminated .
Similar expressions of hearty good feeling were made by Mr. O. A. Creasey , on behalf of the tenants on the Uarlton Hall estate , who presented her lady ship with an address , beautifully illuminated and neatly framed , accompanied by a handsome brass telescope lamp , with marble stand , the well of the lamp being inscribed : - " Presented to Gwendoline Rous , by the tenantry and trade upon Carlton Hall estate upon the occasion of her marriage . June 26th , 1895. "
Lady
Mr. J. WEBDALE ( Wangford ) expressed the deep regret which members of the Primrose League felt at losing the very valuable secretarial service of her ladyship , though they rejoiced at the news of her marriage , sentiments which were heartily applauded .
On rising to acknowledge the gifts , Lady GWENDOLINE met with a reception the nature of which could leave no doubt as to the very cordial relations between her ladyship and those present . She should look , she said , upon the gifts as an additional proof , if such were needed , of the good feeling which had always existed upon those estates between landlord and tenant , and also as a token for her future happiness . She could truly say that she thanked them from the bottom of her heart ; she could not tell them how very highly she valued their kindness .
Major COLVIN also responded in a few happily conceived sentences . He was to a certain extent transplanting one of the fairest flowers from the garden of Henham , and it would be his endeavour to deserve the prize he had won .
After the lungheon , the annual puppy judging in connection with the Henham Harriers Hunt took place at the Kennels , where the company watched the proceedings with great interest . There was a very good entry of ten couples , which were shown in capital condition , and did very great credit to the valkers . The judging was very efficiently done by Major Colvin , formerly master Hounds , and Mr. P. Whittaker , the present master . The prizes were three silver cups , the first and second being given by Earl of Stradbroke , the master , and the third by Lady Hilda McNeil , who has kept up her association with the pack since her marriage by each year offering a prize . The awards were as follows 1st , Student , by Singer - Deadnought , walked by Mr. Mills , of Blythburgh ; 2nd , Duchess , by Dam per - Romany , walked by Capt . Adnams , of Southwold ; 3rd , Merryman , by Dasher - Madcap , walked by Mr. T. Girling of , Frostenden .
The guests afterwards viewed the handsome collection of wedding presents set out in the saloon and having enjoyed a stroll through the gardens , assembled on the lawn , where Lady Stradbroke presented the prizes to the successful walkers of the puppies . Earl Stradbroke then thanked the puppy walkers for the pains they had taken in looking after their charges , as the young hounds had come back to kennel in capital condition . He thanked the judges for the able way in which they had carried out their duties , and said all would agree that their decisions were unquestion able . In responding , Major Colvin complimented the walkers on the condition of the puppies , and he hoped to have the opportunity of judging again , and so keep in touch with the hounds .
Mr. P. WHITTAKER , Master of the Essex and Suffolk , also briefly replied .
Mr. BUXTON , on behalf of the supporters of the Henham Harriers , offered congratulations to Lady Gwendoline on her approaching marriage with Mr. present in the shape of a pearl and diamond Colvin , and begged her acceptance of a small ornament , which , though perhaps small in itself , was a token of a large amount of friendship , or rather he should say of affection . The present was accompanied by an address and list of subscribers . Lady Gwendoline , in making response , said : Mr. Buxton , Ladies and Gentlemen , -I thank you most sincerely for your very kind and handsome present . It will remind me of many happy days with the Henham Harriers , as well as the many good and kind friends who shared in the sport , and who I trust I may never lose sight of . Once more I ask you to accept my most grateful thanks .
The company then adjourned to partake of refreshments , and before they took their departure Captain Adnams expressed their thanks to the noble Earl for keeping the hounds and showing such good sport . They all wished long life and prosperity to the Earl and Countess of Stradbroke . His Lordship responded , expressing the hope he should be supported by those present for many
years .
The marriage of Lady Gwendoline Rous is ar ranged to take place at Wangford Church to - morrow ( Wednesday ) , at 2 o'clock .
MARRIAGE OF MR . R. B. COLVIN
AND
LADY GWENDOLINE ROUS .
broke
friends
The marriage of Mr. Richard Beale Colvin to Lady Gwendoline Rous , which took place on Wed nesday , evoked a most remarkable demonstration of the public interest which has always been attached to great events at Henham Hall . With the free hearted and full - handed hospitality of typical old English gentlemen , the Earls of Strad have on many occasions . invited and neighbours of all classes . to participate in family rejoicings , and celebrations of this kind - notably those when the present Lord was born and when he came of age - are held in pleasant remembrance throughout the whole country side . In the present instance , there was one circum stance which gave an added touch of romance to a revival of the old traditions . Not for one hundred years past had of the daughters of Henham Hall been married at her home or parish church , other unions having London taken place in according to more fashionable decrees . It may well be imagined , however , that Major Colvin and his fair bride , both lovers of country life and pursuits , preferred the charming accompaniments of a country wedding , and their union was certainly an ideal ceremony of that character . The weather was delightfully fine , the country roads and lanes ( all leading to Wangford and Henham for this day ) were seen in their loveliest aspect , and the proceedings were marked by a thorough - going enthusiasm which is in these days rarely witnessed .

The arrangements were that the marriage should take place at Wangford Church at two o'clock . Henham Hall lies within the parish boundaries of this large village , nearly the whole of which belongs to the estate , and , as landlord and tenants have ever been on mutual terms of respect and good - will , residents did their utmost do give outward and visible evidence of pleasure and sympathy . A Decoration Committee was formed , comprising Mr. Chris . Smith ( chairman ) , Mr. W. J. Chilvers , Mr. S. Farrow , Mr. John Ellis , Mr. F. G. Rumbelow , and Dr. Acton ; and , with the fund raised under these joint auspices , joined to private efforts , the place positively brilliant in the holiday adornments of flags . triumphal arches , and boldly - displayed mottoes . Mr. William J. Chilvers , builder and contracter , entrusted with a good part this work , and he discharged the duty with admirable effect . The first arch the entrance to the village ( from the Hall ) spanned the road at a point opposite his premises . Upon the top of it , in large letters , was the aspiration , Success to the houses of Rous and Colvin ; " and , on the other side , " May God bless the happy pair . " Next door , at Wangford Post Office , Mr. Forrest the had made a nice display , with mottoes " Health " and Happiness , " which were supremely good , if not altogether original , " wishes " in words . Mr. W. Bickers and Mr. William Terry came out strong , as did also Mr. Galer , with a legend , " Blest be this day , and prosperous their lives . " The Swan Hotel ( Mrs. Newberry ) prayed for " Long life and happiness to bride and bridegroom , " and this was responded to on the walls of opposite cottages . Near the Lion Hotel stood another arch ( erected by Mr. Baxter ) , which bore the large and true declaration
at
The village echoed to the cry , Long live the noble pair !

The names given represent a somewhat invidious selection , as every householder contributed something to the general effect , not only in the main street , but in the turning to Southwold known as Church Street . Suffice it to add in this connection that the well - known Angel Hotel was uncommonly gay , and that the fluttering vista of colour ended another grand arch , which crossed the from the shop of Mr. Farrow , and draper , with a motto conspicuous through ever greens and flags , God give them joy . " The churchyard gate , which is recessed from the road , was surmounted by a striking structure of ever greens , which was in triangular form , with in scriptions on both faces , and heraldic devices in the apex , one of which stood above the words ( under stood to be the heraldic motto of theStradbroke family ) " Je vive en espoir " ( I live in hope . ) The long pathway to the church gate , now carpeted crimison cloth , lies between high banks , which were crowded with spec tators ; some few venturesome spirits found a splendid coign of ' vantage on the top of the steeple , from which the Union Jack was flying ; and there was so large an assembly in the some what narrow street that great difficulty was ex perienced in keeping the road clear for vehicles . This arduous duty was well and courteously dis charged by a staff of county police under Superintendent Andrews , of Halesworth , assisted by Inspector Porter , of Southwold .
