CONTEMPTIBLE " IN FRANCE .
When the regiment returned to the mother country , it was stationed at Nor wich , and it was from there , in August , 1914 , that it went to France , being the advance portion of that " contemptible little army " which made a great name for itself in history . Major Brooke - Knop was one of the early band to set foot in France , and he was at the battle of Mons with his gallant comrades stem ming the advance of the invader . He remained on active service until 1918 , when he was invalided out , and it was in that year that he and Mrs. Brooke Knop took up their residence in Worth ing . His decorations for the Great War included the Mons Star , with rose bar , the General Service Medal , and the Victory Medal , on the ribbon of which was & bronze oak leaf , signifying that
and
the Major was mentioned in dispatches . The deceased officer had only just been accorded the high honour of Military Knight of Windsor . He married , cn 24th June , 1905 , Miss Emily Butt Deane , daughter of Mr. John Deane , of Ealing , and granddaughter of the last Countess Asperne of Asperne , and on that occasion the members of the Sergeants ' Mess of his regiment pre sented him with a sword , which rested on his coffin yesterday . Since they have been in Worthing , Major and Mrs. Brooke - Knop have identified themselves with the church life of St. Paul's , and yesterday several of the congregation at tended to pay a last tribute of respect to
the dead Major .
