R.S.M. J. 46 . FIRD , 1911 , Lancers , were MAJOR H. BROOKE - KNOP.N.C.O.8 The Brooke - Knop ( widow ) , Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Deane ( brother - in - law and sister - in Worthing Resident Buried on law ) , Miss Deane ( sister - in - law ) , Mr. and Wedding Anniversary . Mrs. Gerald Stacey ( brother - in - law and sister - in - law ) , Miss F. Asperne Deane and Dr. H. J. Stormont Yesterday , on the 19th anniversary of ( sister - in - law ) , ( medical attendant ) . his wedding day , Major Herman Brooke Knop , of 11 , Park - crescent , Worthing , FLORAL TRIBUTES . was laid to rest in Broadwater Cemetery , There was a wealth of floral tributes , he having passed away at the early age and tokens , in addition to those of the of 56. The deceased had lived in Worth ing for about five years , and both he and Mrs , Brooke - Knop had , by their marked geniality of character , made a large circle of friends . The last surviving son of Mr. John Brooke - Knop , Superintendent of Telegraphs in Ootacamund , India , Major Brooke - Knop had a fine career of service in the Army , and he was in the Mrs. Condé Williams ; Miss Gorsett ; 12th Royal Lancers for the long period of 31 years . Serving in that distinguished regiment , he went right through South African war , and was the proud holder of the King's and Queen's medals , with two bars to the former and six on the latter . family , were sent by the Commanding Officer and officers of the 12th Lancers ; Non - Commissioned Officers of the 12th Lancers ; Sergeants ' Mess , 12th Lancers ; Lieut . -Colonel and Mrs. L. A. Bethell ; Lieut . - Colonel and Mrs. Stanley Clarke ; Mr. James Baird ; Major and Mrs. Char rington ; Mrs. Livesey ; Misses Badnall ; Miss McInnes ; Miss Edwards ; Dr. and Mrs. Stormont ; Miss Stormont ; Mr. and Mrs. Trested Clark ; Councillor and Mrs. the G. Ketchlee ; Mrs. Swayne ; Mrs. Kelsey ( Tunbridge Wells ) ; Mr. and Mrs. Roberts ; Dr. and Mrs. Darbyshire ; Nurse Bates ; " Helen , " and " Sarah . " CONTEMPTIBLE " IN FRANCE . When the regiment returned to the mother country , it was stationed at Nor wich , and it was from there , in August , 1914 , that it went to France , being the advance portion of that " contemptible little army " which made a great name for itself in history . Major Brooke - Knop was one of the early band to set foot in France , and he was at the battle of Mons with his gallant comrades stem ming the advance of the invader . He remained on active service until 1918 , when he was invalided out , and it was in that year that he and Mrs. Brooke Knop took up their residence in Worth ing . His decorations for the Great War included the Mons Star , with rose bar , the General Service Medal , and the Victory Medal , on the ribbon of which was & bronze oak leaf , signifying that and the Major was mentioned in dispatches . The deceased officer had only just been accorded the high honour of Military Knight of Windsor . He married , cn 24th June , 1905 , Miss Emily Butt Deane , daughter of Mr. John Deane , of Ealing , and granddaughter of the last Countess Asperne of Asperne , and on that occasion the members of the Sergeants ' Mess of his regiment pre sented him with a sword , which rested on his coffin yesterday . Since they have been in Worthing , Major and Mrs. Brooke - Knop have identified themselves with the church life of St. Paul's , and yesterday several of the congregation at tended to pay a last tribute of respect to the dead Major . A CHORAL SERVICE . The Vicar ( the Rev. T. W. Ketchlee ) took the service , which was choral . Mr. Charles Robinson ( organist ) presided at present with a party of were Mrs. E. mourners the organ , and prior to the service played " O Rest in the Lord , " among other items , as a voluntary . In the course of the service the 23rd Psalm , " The Lord is my Shepherd , " was sung , and the hymns chosen were : " The Saints of God " was and " My God , my Father . " . The coffin covered with the Union Jack , and on it rested the dead officer's sword and helmet , with the red plumes distinguish ing the regiment , and also his war medals , and as it was borne out of the church the organist played the Dead March in " Saul .
