The Old Comrades of the cavalry regi ments yesterday paid tribute at a memo rial service at the Cavalry Memorial , Stanhope Gate , Hyde Park , W. , to their fellows who were killed in the war .
Several hundreds of old cavalrymen , including numbers of Chelsea pen sioners , assembled at the eastern end of the Serpentine - road and , led by Lieut. General Sir Edward Bethune , marched to the memorial , headed by the band of the 12th ( Prince of Wales's ) Royal Lan
cers .
Here they were joined by thousands of people in a simple and impressive ser vice round the memorial , the central feature of which is a bronze figure of St. George mounted on horseback , having a sword uplifted . Under the horse is the dead body of the dragon . After the Rev. Owen S. Watkins , Deputy Chaplain - General to the Forces ,
had paid tribute to the services of the cavalry during the war , a large wreath was laid at the foot of the memorial on behalf of the combined Cavalry Old Com rades ' Association , and the " Last Post " was sounded by trumpeters of the 12th Royal Lancers .
The hymn O God , our help in ages past , " was followed by the " Réveillé . " Numbers of floral tributes were laid alongside the large wreath , among them a wreath from the 2nd King Edward's Horse , and bunches of daffodils placed by women in black .
