LIEUTENANT - COLONEL R. L. McCREERY , 12TH ROYAL LANCERS .
There can be no greater triumph for an officer in command of a Cavalry Regiment than to lead his polo team to victory in the Inter - Regimental , as Colonel Douglas Haig led the 17th Lancers in 1903. Colonel McCreery and his three subalterns had to overcome every sort of difficulty to win the tournament this year , as having just returned from Egypt , the regiment were ordered back there again , and Colonel McCreery has already flown back to Cairo to re - assume command . Only once before have the 12th Lancers won the Inter - Regimental , in 1914 , and not even their present Commanding Officer , who has played for them for the last fourteen years , had then joined them ! Incidentally , this victory would suggest that
the mechanised cavalry are not likely to forget all the traditions of their days as horsed troops .
