Notes on back of Ebsworths drawing ,
Owing to troubles increasing at Cape received sudden orders to hand over horses at Winchester to other corps in K , and to em hark at Portsmouth , ( subsequently a portion of the regiment emb arked later by steamer Birkenhead , was entirely lost , Remounted . at Cape The 12th were ordered to lay aside their lances and use double barrel carbines same as the C M Rifles were armed with , The belts and pouches to be altered to suit same , and pistols given up , Depot marched to Canterbury , then Maidstone , retaining lances which were readopted when the 12th moved to India ,
