The 9th Lancers had every reason to feel gratified at the reception accorded to them by the crowds of spectators assembled in the streets to witness their march from Hounslow to the Royal Albert Docks , where they embarked for Natal to reinforce the troops at the Cape . Nowhere was the crowd more hearty in their welcome than in the City . Cannon Street was lined with people , ten or twelve deep , who kept up shouts of goodwill while the troops went by . The scene was ve.y striking . The troops , riding two abreast with pennants waving , seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see , while on either side were spectators waving hats and handkerchiefs THE CAPE THE NINTH LANCERS PASSING THROUGH THE CITY ON THEIR WAY TO THE DOCKS
