After a delay at the post , caused through a breakaway on the part of Spinnifex , Jock and Cornflower , the lot were oft to an even start , with the exception of Jock , who hung fire as the barrier rose . Lady Quickstep , on the rails , Spinnifex , Mas cotte and Ballerest , in the centre , and Esteem and Cornflower , on the outside , were the leading files as the junetion of the courses was croszed . With half journey gone , Lady Quickstep was show ing clear of Ballcrest and Mascotte , whilst Recluse joined the leading division . Be low the distance Mascotte went on second , but could never extend Lady Quickstep , who won comfortably at the finish by three lengths . A neck away Ballcrest was third , and two lengths further back , Re cluse was fourth . Close up Spinnifex was fifth , E.D.B. sixth , Whirlwind seventh , Spare Moments and Spectroscope together next , with Biltong and Eastern Princess the last pair .
