PRAISE FOR 9TH LANCERS . 1 6 REGIMENTAL ORDERS . The following regimental orders relating to s the work of this famous regiment have been s published to the men : The following appreciation of the work of the 9th Lancers , for the information of all ranks . - From the general commanding - Brigade : Cavalry " I cannot sufficiently express my admiration of the gallant conduct of the 9th Lancers on May 24 , and it is a source of the greatest pride to me to have them in my brigade . " From the general commanding Brigade : ( 6 Cavalry During a portion of the day the 9th Lancers came nominally under my orders , but , as all telephonic communication with you was cut off , I therefore now take the opportunity of ex pressing to you my great appreciation of the gallant conduct of the regiment . " From the general commanding Division : Cavalry " Please give the following message to the regiment from me : ' My admiration of the 9th is unbounded . " " From the general commanding Cavalry Corps : " No words of mine can express the admira tion I feel for you all . Of course , I always knew the 9th would stick it out , but that does not in any way lessen my great admiration for the conduct of all . You may publish any order you like , but nothing will adequately express what I feel about the regiment . " THE HE MORNING POST , MONDAY , JULY 5 , 1915 . HEROISM IN THE FIELD . DISTINGUISHED SERVICE His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the appointment of the undermentioned Officers to be Companions of the Distinguished Service Order in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty whilst serving with the Expeditionary Force : Captain JOHN GREY PORTER , 9th ( Queen's Royal ) Lancers . On May 10th , 1915 , when a very heavy attack was made on the front line near Hooge , Captain Porter went up to the infantry line there and brought back very valuable information regarding the situation . On the 13th May he rendered the greatest possible assist ance in taking messages under terrific shell fire to various parts of the line and reporting on various local situations . He set an example of coolness and total disregard of danger that was beyond all praise . He has been twice wounded previously in this campaig SPORTING LIFE , MONDAY , JULY 5 , 1915 . D.S.O.FOR CAPT.J. G. PORTER MANY SPORTSMEN IN NEW LIST OF AWARDS . A further list of awards for gallantry was published in a supplement to the London Gazette " on Saturday . Major G. H. A. Ing , the Queen's Bays polo player , receives the D.S.O. , as does Capt . J. G. Porter , one of the improving polo players in the 9th Lancers , a fine steeplechase rider , and smart boxer , runner - up in the Navy and Army middle - weights last year . Another D.S.O. is Capt . H. G. M. Railston , perhaps the best polo player in the infantry ranks , a member of the Tigers ' team that won the Ranelagh Open Cup in 1913 , and of many other win ning teams . Capt . D. B. Burt Marshall , the well - known Service cricketer , is another officer to receive the D.S.O. Among those awarded the Military Cross are Capt . S. G. Menzies , D.S.O. , the 2nd Life Guards pouo player . Capt . G. F. Reynolds , a fine pofo player and horseman , who hunted with the Hertfordshire , and was a successful point - to - point rider . Lieut . O. K. Parker , of the 2nd Northants , the Old Marlborough and R.M.C. forward . 2nd - Lieut . . M. Stanford , R.F.A. , a good forward , who played for the R.M.A. against the R.M.C. in 1913 , and Lieut . N. K. Worthington , 3rd Dragoon Guards polo player , and successful point - to - point rider . who is CAPTAIN ARCHDALE PORTER . Captain J. G. Archdale - Porter , D.S.O. , 9th ( Queen's Royal ) Lancers , gazetted to the Royal Flying Corps as a Flying Officer , is the eldest son of Mr. John Porter Porter , D.L. , Belle Isle , Lisbellaw , County Fermanagh . He has served with distinction it France and Flanders , and has been twice wounded . He won the D.S.O. in May , 1915 , when he set an example of coolness and total disregard of danger that was beyond all praise . His brother , Second Lieutenant H. A. Porter , 9th Lancers , was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry last year . Marriage of Capt . G. PORTER AND MISS DUFT - ASSHETON SMITH . The marriage of Captain John Grey Porter , D.S.O. , 9th ( Queen's Royal ) Lancers , eldest son of Mr. John Porter Porter , of Belle Isle , County Fermanagh , who is home from the front on leave , and Miss Enid Mary Duff - Assheton - Smith , only daughter of the late Mr. George William Duff - Assheton - Smith , of Vaynol , Carnarvon , and Mrs. Holdsworth , took place yester day at St. George's , Hanover - square , very quietly , owing to the war . The Bishop of Bangor officiated , assisted by Pre bendary F. N. Thicknesse . The bride was given away by her uncle , Mr. Henry Assheton Duff . There were no bridesmaids . The Hon . William Westenra , cousin of the bridegroom , was best man . The bride wore a gown of white charmeuse , with a little bunch of orange blossom in the silver waist band ; silver tassels hung from a short cape at the back , and her tulle veil was caught with a wreath of green leaves on a gold band . " Mank " PORTER - Major John Grey Archdale Porter , D.S.O. , Lancers , eldest son of Mr. John Porter Porter , of Belle Isle , Lis bellow , Ireland , has died of wounds received in action . Born in 1886 , he was educated at Harrow , and received his first com mission in 1906. Wounded at Mons and again in the following year , he was awarded the D.S.O. for conspicuous bravery in the In 1916 he returned to England for a course of flying , but after obtaining his wings rejoined his regiment at the front , and at the time of his death was second in command . field . 6th Dec 1915 ROLL OF HONOUR . IN MEMORIAM . ARCHDALE - PORTER . - In proud memory of a very galtant 9th Lancer , Major J. G. ARCHDALE - PORTER . D.S.O. , who died of wounds received the same day at Cambrai , Nov. 21st , 1917 . I AM deeply sorry to see that among those killed during the advance on Cambrai last week was Major J. G. Porter , D.S.O. , of the Lancers , and elder son of Mr. J. Porter Porter , the well - known Irish breeder , of Belleisle . Major . Porter had served with great distinction , and won the D.S.O. at Hooge in May , 1915. He had been twice previously wounded , was thirty - one years of age , and leaves a widow , having been married in December , 1915 , to Miss Assheton Smith , a niece of Sir Charles Assheton Smith , who won the Grand National with Cloister , Jerry M. and Covertcoat . His brother , Lieutenant H. A. Porter , was also badly wounded last week . SECOND LIEUTENANT H. A. PORTER . Second Lieutenant H. Archdale Porter , 9th Lancers , wounded in France , is the second son of Mr. John Porter Porter , Belle Isle , Lisbellaw , County Fermanagh . His brother , Captain J. G. Porter , who is also serving with the 9th Lancers , has been twice wounded in the present war , and was awarded the D.S.O. for gallantry at Hooge , in May of last year , when , it is officially recorded , " he set an example of coolness and total disregard of danger that was beyond all praise .
