The Chaplain Writes: The word of (a man close to) God
013 has been an eventful year with the 9th/ 12th Royal Lanc-
ers (POW’S), full of great challenges and opportunities. Here
are some of the highlights of the year.
The year was full of Mission Specific Training for the regiment
following on from the training we gained in BATUS Canada in
November 12. In Feb 13 I got go out and spend a few weeks
with B SQN in Cyprus where they were training for their role as
the Brigade Reconnaissance Force later on in the year on HER-
RICK 19. They were taken through their paces in all manner of
ways and I got to join them night hiking up Mt Olympus in Tru-
dos in writhing snow storms, in complete contrast to the train-
ing in Akrotiri in the Cyprian heati In Cyprus and throughout
the year I supplemented the MST with training in Values and
Standards and at the end of our uaining in Cyprus we had a field
service bringing together everything we had learnt and placing
ourselves in God’s hands for the future challenge of operations
in Afghanistan. Little did we know just how true that would be
when we faced the loss of LCpl Jay Brynin (who was there that
day) a few months later. The loss ofJames was a bitter blow at the
beginning of Ops in Afghanistan, but we take consolation that
he died doing what he loved and we are proud to have served
with him! For me personally caring for the Sqn and particularly
Jay’s colleagues and friends who formed the LEWT team in the
aftermath of his loss was a real privilege, as was leading the vigil
in Bastion and the Ramp Ceremony as we repatriated Jay back to
his family in the UK. It’s something I will never forget!
My wife Juliette and myself also provided MST for families with
the Strong Bonds Marriage Course and the “Dealing With Dis-
tance” session aimed at helping couples better handle the stress- , ‘ _ .
es that enforced separation due to deployment creates. Then in 7 ‘ a ' ,
September we also provided a families weekend away at Church
