Dctmnld ment to the Sabre Squadrons. Team games and sports were greatly curtailed by the demands of Operation Banner and the armoured training programme but the regimental polo team again reached the second round of the competition and a down— hill skiing team consisting of Captain Twickel and Lts Hen- derson and Clifton came fourth in the Divisional meeting, The Kiel sailors again distinguished themselves under Major Coghlan. Show jumping and eventing were well supported by Maiors Barrington and Coghlan and 2;’Lt Strakcr: the latter doing particularly well in the Army Three Day Event at Tid- worth despite riding in a collar having broken a bone in his neck A number of oflicers and grooms hunted regularly with the Weser Vale Bloodhounds and others, including wives, attended the horsemanship courses in the Life Guards’ riding school in Detmoldv A very enjoyable Mons/May day was cel- ebrated in June. It should be recorded that on Sunday 29 October tablets in l memory of General Sir Richard McCreery and the Duke of Westminster were dedicated at St Michael’s Garrison Church, Tidworth in the presence of 120 members of the Old Comrades Association and their wives, The armoured training programme and the Northern Ireland tour carried out in 1972 were the forerunners of those which happened in 1973 and 1974 B Squadron, now commanded by Major Coghlan, was in Ulster from May to September 1973 for the usual four months tour and C Squadron went to Sufiield in August and on return represented the Regiment on the divisional exercise in the autumn. What was left ofA Squadron (now Major Mort) stayed in Detmold maintaining tanks except for one escape to the anti»aircraft firing camp at Todendorf on the Baltic. What was usually a mundane administrative task proved to be a splendid opportunity in the German lake dis— trict to escape the chores at home. Two outstanding regimental personalities retired in 1973 Major Dewar, who had originally served in the Royal Tank Regiment, transferred to the Pay Corps and thence to the 12th Lancers as Regimental Paymaster in 1959 and finally to the 9/12th Lancers, was one of the most loyal and staunch members of the regimental family.
