A Squadron went to Libya for a month with the Royal Scots,
BSquadron to Vogelsang having spent a month in Berlin,
whilst the resident squadron of the lst Royal Tank Regiment
went to gunnery camp, and C Squadron followed by A Squa-
dron to Larzac in souhern France. The Commanding Officer
was flown to Larzac by Captain Lott-Phillips who later turned
the aeroplane on its propeller necessitating a return to Osna-
bruck by second»class train with wooden seats. All were con»
centrated again at Osnabruck in September for the visit of the
Colonel of Lhe Regiment and Old Comrades for Mons/Moy
weekend. They were accompanied by the new Duke and
Duchess of Westminster who presented a Trumpet Banner in
memory of the late Colonel. It is competed for every year by
the regimental trumpeters. The very vigorous training season
made it more than usually difficult to field polo teams but
tournaments were enjoyed with the Germans at Dusseldorf,
and at Munster, Hohne and Berlin. The annual soldiers tour~
nament brought out a team consisting of the brothers Parsons,
Lance Corporal McEllroy and Trooper Osborne: they won
their first match but then lost to the 14/20th Hussars. The
Garrison Saddle Club, chaired by the Commanding Officer,
flourished, members doing particularly well at the Osnabruck
Horse Show. Inspired by the avcnture training expedition to
Pakistan a party under Captain Hibbcrt-Foy set out for Khar-
toum by Landrovcr in August. They reached Kufrah in the
Libyan desert after a regimental battlefield tour in reverse —
Tunis, Sfax, Gabes, Tripoli and Agedabia. The departure of
Bandmaster Keeling in June ended a tour of exceptional stan-
dards in the Band. He was ultimately to become Director of
Music of the Household Cavalry and much admired on
mounted parades on the Horse Guards.
The Regiment’s five year tour in BAOR ended with an
outstanding report from the GOC 2 Division, Major General
Blair, at the Annual Administrative Inspection. To achieve a
suitable drive past on icy roads at the end of the parade the
leading squadron was preceded by a formation of German
