CHAPTER THREE OSNABR UCK Osnabruck, a large industrial town in northern Westphalia, was not a familiar station to either the 9th or 12th Lancers. When the Regiment assembled at Imphal Barracks in early November the town was the location of the largest garrison in BAOR with 14,000 troops. 12 Infantry Brigade Group was the major I formation consisting of one Armoured Regiment and three Infantry Battalionsr The regimental barracks were shared for a few months with the East Anglians and then with the Queen‘s Own Highlanders with whom a very close and friendly relation- ship built up both in barracks and on training. The Regiment was equipped with Centurion 20 pounder tanks and three troops of Conqueror 120mm tanks. Huts of post—war con» struction provided the accommodation and were comfortable enough. In the key regimental appointments, Major Waller returned to command A Squadron, Major Bonsor to CSqua- dron and Major Andrews to HQ Squadron. Captain Pye took over as Adjutant from Captain Mordaunt who had been Adju» tant in South Arabia. Lt Norman was welcomed back on com- missioning and RSM J James struggled to maintain his identity from RQMS JJames. 140 families were able to move into quarters in the garrison. Although some tank training had been possible in Aden there was, fortunately, a strong nucleus ofold hands with previous tank experience and they spent a very busy winter passing on that knowledge. But not everyone spent the winter on the tank park or in the Training Wing. Lt Peto succeeded in winning the Army Rackets Cup and the Army Doubles with Captain Williams (4/7DG) whilst in StMoritz an exceptional downhill ski team under Captain Rayner won 43 # |
