Sharjah and sailed to join the Royal Scots Greys, Marines and
Paratroops on Das Island in the Persian Gulf, BSquadron
seized the opportunity of mounting some of its HQ staff on
camels borrowed from the Scouts and sending them off on a
patrol under Sergeant Johnsonl Although caught in a sand-
storrn they avoided the hurricane that almost destroyed the
squadron campl All this activity was marred for B Squadron
and the Regiment when Major Lewis and Trooper Brierly were
tragically killed on 18 April when their aircraft crashed on
landing near Buraimi oasis. They were the first to be buried at
the garrison cemetery) Sharjah. Major Brown came up from
Aden to command the Squadron for the rest of the tour.
The visit of the Colonel of the Regiment in April enabled
him to see the squadrons at Little Aden and to visit some of
the troops deployed on the frontierl From Mukeiras, where he
spent the night, he went on to Beihan and then flew back for a
dinner night at Little Adenl The Regiment paraded for him
before he left on 15th.
Aden was a good jumping ofi" place for expeditions. Major
Charrington took his Squadron HQ through the Hadramhaut.
