TH!“ 9THIIZTH ROYAL 1 AN( I'RS REUIMENTAI JOURNAL / . ".17 / rumhmnt Mtglntimmart Kn nt- vu- squmn rmm slutrtrlg r l Rtkhc‘lh. ('pt lrttkmtt and t pl smart This season we had one of the strongest Regimental sides for many years. Cpl Stevens and Lt Roskelly both represented the RAC in the trials Corps Squash Championships. Cpl Jackson. our No. 3. reached the Quarter Finals in the Divisional Championships, un- fortunately run on the same dates. With Staff Norman and Staff Figgins at four and five. we had not only strength at the top. but also good depth. With this side we had hopes of winning the Divisional Championships. and making our mark in the Army Championships. Unfortunately Cpl Stevens left the Army before the Divisional Finals and with Cpl Jackson temporarily posted away. we lost the Final 4.1 to l RTR. 2Lt Wilson stepped in to fill the gap when Cpl Stevens left. putting in two spirited performances at number five. He was injured for the Final. so with Cpl Jackson also unable to play. we had to call upon the talents of Lt Carver and SQMS Hardy. Un< fortunately their will to win was not enough. though we are most grateful for their help. Throughout the year we made full use of the excellent facilities at the local German Squash Club in Braunschweig. Last November we entered a combined Army /(‘lub side for the Da De We Cup in Berlin. We were pitted against the No. l seeds and three times winners in the lst round. We lost 4-2. though not without giving them a fight. However. we won the Plate Competition and received a racquet each for our efforts. This pleased Cpl Jackson enormously due to his uncanny knack for breaking racquets this year. Although we have had a good season it was to some degree spoiled because we failed to realise the team's full potentials As Cpl Jackson and Lt Roskelly are due to leave the Regiment next summer the short term future doesn't look too good. However. with the large number of people now playing squash. the excellent facilities in Braunschweig and the budding talent in the Officers’ Mess i . . who knows! Badminton The Regimental Team entered two competitions, the Is! Armoured Division Stage of the BAOR lnter Unit and the BAOR Divisional Knockout. The lnler Unit started off with a bye against l4/20H. This was followed by a close game against 21 Engr Regt which the Regiment won 54, At this stage the Regiment lost its No. 1 player in this competition. Cpl Stevens who was sadly missed in the Semi Final against 25 Engr Reg who won 7-2. They went on to win the final against 14 Sgt Regt. The play-off for 3rd and ‘th places was won by 7 Armd Wksp against a very depleted Regimental Team. In the BAOR Divisional Knockout the Regiment’s first game was against 16/20H. A contest made harder because the Regimental Team was short of one man owing to a mix up in timings. However. the team pulled through to win 6-5. This game was followed by two walkovers against 1 I 1 Pro RMP and 32 Armd Engr who could not get teams together. The last game in the zone was against 14 Sig Regt who had been the runners up in the inter Unit competition. A good match with some hard fought games ending with 14 Sigs coming out on top 7-4. The Regiment ended up second in the zone which put us into the Divisional Semi-Finals. Sadly. owing to EX SlLVER JUBlLEE. the Badminton Secretary being unable to change dates. the Regimental Team had to withdraw from the Competition. Sgt Malsher would like to thank all who played for the Regiment and gave up so much of their time to training and playing matches. With especial thanks to Mick Murray's wife. Ruth. plus the NAAFI Manager Gordon Harrison and his wife. who played for the Regiment in the Inter Divisional Knockout. |
