As expected a frequently
encountered problem was that of
leeches. They struck at every
opportunity and look great delight in
crawling down the inside of boots
through socks. Mr Carr‘s blue blood
obviously attracted them. though in a
scene almost out of the film ‘Stand By
Me‘ Capt Charrington gave an
involuntary blood donation from an
unexpected part of his anatomy.
Lesson: never squat on the ground with
only a pair of boxer shorts on.

The rest of the time in Malaysia was
spent on well earned R at R. After a
couple of days shooting rapids in and
out of long boats. the East Coast was
visited. Essentially a massive strip of
white sand running from Thailand to
Singapore. the coast is relatively
undeveloped and peaceful. After
Kuantan a boat was taken to Tioman
Island, a suitably idyllic location where
‘Soum Pacific’ was filmed. Singapore.
Raffles Hotel, and Gin Slings were
next encountered (though the infamous
Boogie Street has been sanitized
(demolished) by the government in a
moralistic and commercial drive).
Before a return to Kuala Lumpur via
Molacca and onward flight to Hong
Kong. To our relief the MOD flew the
group back to England though this joy
was shattered on the return to Carver
Barracks, we had just got back 2 hours
before the start of the Regimental
Cross Country.
