Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1985
Transcription THE 9TH/lZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAl
’ Ex Highland Diamond — Regimental Langlauf Team
The Regimental Langlauf Team
training took place in Garmisch,
Southern Germany. It was an extremely
comfortable five weeks, living in the
American accommodation in Sheridan
Camp.
On 7th December a team of five left
camp. consisting of 21.1 Wilson. Cpl
Tyler, LCpl Bazcly, Tpr Ducker and
Tpr Radbourne. The journey down
was almost without incident apart
from when the ‘cam rod’ flew
through the engine block 30km outside
Garmisch, The team arrived in style,
being towed behind a ‘recker‘ into
thecamp.
The training for this arduous sport '
was hard. days were spent running up
and down hills and valleys around the
German sports track with long sessions
in the American Gyrni This modern
gym was well equipped to meet our
simple needs and provided much
amusement when studying the ‘body
beautiful’ builders who. not only sat
for long hours ‘flexing and admiring
themselves in front of the many
mirrors. but. also. claiming to have
achieved great lauglaufing fears in the
high mountains of New York! (They
also believed we were the British
National Team practicing for the
World Championships in Seefeld).
As training continued Tpr Ducker‘s
appetite grew and grewl Business during
the months of December and January
reached an all time high for
McDonald’s and Wendy’s burger barl
Days off were on Sundays. Notable
feats during these well earned and
precious days were the Anglo~American
outing to 'Andecs’ a monastry near
Munich which brews a particularly
nasty dark ale. A 9/12L pairs team
climbed to the summit of ‘Wauk'
Mountain in horrendous conditions!
Also worth mentioning was the Anglo-
German sledge run down Krammer
Mountain in the dark (with a skin full)
nearly losing the entire team!
On New Year's day the snow came
and we gladly put on the skis ready to
he “beasteo” by Cpl Tyler, who always
seemed to slide effortlessly across the
snow and was now at a high level of
fitness. Techniques improved by leaps
and bounds and by the time it came to
the Divisional Championships the
team. still complete. was fighting fit.
For the Divisional championships we
moved across the border into Austria,
to Axamsi In the first race the 4x 10km
Relay, the team of 2Lt Wilson, LCpl
Bazeiy. Tprs Ducker and Radbourne
did respectably well coming 13th out of
32 teams. A good standard was kept up
in the 15km Individual Race and in the
25km Patrol Race. 2Lt Wilson. Tpr
Ducker and Tpr Radbourne also
competed in the all rounder: Race.
the 15km Langlauf and Giant Slalom.
0n the 24th January the team came
back to Wolfenbuttel having acquitted
themselves well at Axams. after a hard
but enjoyable five weeks with the very
hospitable Americans.
