The following day the competition started with the 9/ 12L team completing the Small Arms Live Firing at 0700 hrs in the morning and the Combat Recce Patrol in the afternoon. Both events were carried out in torrential rain. The SMG is an inherent- ly inaccurate machine gun and not the best weapon for this kind of competition. Nevertheless the team shot reasonably well and came 13th equal with the Italian team and the Panzeraufltlarangs hataillon 3 team. The 13/18H had an unfortunate shoot and came last in this event. The continuing downpour in the afternoon reduced visibility severely on the Reece Patrol Course; the situation being made worse by a complete loss of communications by everyone including the German Umpires and the Control Centre. Scoring was done from the Patrol Log Sheets. Despite the atrocious con- ditions the team did extremely well. Out of the 6 teams completing this event on the first day 9/12L team was the only one to be awarded bonus points. The team was complimented on its performance by Philipp Freiherr Van Boeselager who followed the patrol as a spectator. At the end of the first day's competition amazingly we were in the lead and spirits were high! The second day was to prove the toughest. starting with the Enemy Identification Station at 0000 hrs. The ll/lBH had tackled this stand the day before and were in the lead with a score of 698. With rain still falling heavily and feeling apprehensive. the Regimental Team completed the test with a score of 594 points which put us temporarily in frontl Panzeraufklarngs hataillon 3 eventually pushed us into second place overall with a higher score. The identification station was followed at noo hrs by the Cross Country and Obstacle Course. it was here that all our fitness training told and the team named in with an amazing time and the fewest penalty points from the THE 9TH/l2TH RDYALI ANCERS REGIMENTAl JOURN-U 1,an Harrison L-lls‘ourngt‘x I.('p| Mils‘on up the “all and Ihrouglt the ninth)“ tlunttg m.- mm ctiuntr} uhslacle course. grenade throwing. No one could match this performance so the 9/121. team secured first place overall amidst tremendous applause from the onlookers. The Skill Driving Course followed at 1600 hrs and we were rewarded with a respectable 6th equal place after some good driving by LCpl Harrison and some very accurate distance judging by Sgl Shipley. After a couple of hours rest the team were off again on the Night Orienteering March which was conducted over Han-like terrain in pitch darkness. |
