lllL‘ITH IJlHROYAl LANfl-RS REGIML—NTM JOURNAL Band Once established in Northampton Barracks after the move to Wolfen- butlel, the Regimental Band began to plan the year ahead. A new location involves getting re—established with the local community. Hence. extensive publicity and public relations concerts throughout the area to promote the good name of the Regiment. In effect. letting it be known that the Regimental Band is “in town". After a few local concerts in the Stadt and at the Regiment's cocktail party the Band ironically was to travel back to Hohne for its first major engagement. playing at the l4th/20th Kings Hussars Officers' Mess. This turned into something of a marathon due to the number of courses served. After returning to Wolfenbuttel and a few hours sleep the band made an early start, to travel to 32 Engineer Regiment to perform a Beating of Retreat Ceremony; despite the marathon evening the night before we were in fine form and were well received. The next few weeks saw the Band performing extensively in Wolfenbutttl town and area. Everything from Public Relations concerts to leading the parade for the centenary celebrations of the local fire brigade. Despite popular belief, the blue flashing light that appeared to be coming from the Band- master was in fact part of the leading man-drawn antique fire engine. No heavenly glow for the Bandmaster! As the summer progressed we travelled throughout West Germany with \l.tl’(lllllu tIH I'.Hlnlc \itlll\ \lm 198-! engagements in Celle. Salzgitter. Bremen, Hamburg, several unpro- nounceable spa towns and in numerous Harz Mountain village communities. Though hard pressed the band con- tinued to travel and perform while at the same time preparing a new marching display for the Mons Moy Celebrations. it was decided that the annual Colonel's Trumpeter Competition at Mons/Moy should take place prior to the Band‘s Marching display. in front of the VlP's and the attending audience. The competition for this prestigious position was. as always. fierce . a high standard of turnout and sounded calls being achieved. The eventual winner. after long deliberation by the Judges. was Bandsman Watson. |
