Regiment 9th/12th Lancers
Year 1985
Transcription D Squadron
The Squadron has now survived its
first year and goes from strength to
strength. We have had a busy year with
much variety. We said farewell to
Captain Lewis who was dined out in
style by SHQ Tp. and we have seen a
sizeable reinforcement of the Squadron
by new recruits. As a result we are now
able to man all our equipment in-
cluding Support Troop.
May saw us providing the enemy for
PROBEX. This provided much variety;
for amusement and fun we attacked
trains, staged car crashes, demonstrated.
manned check points. We even catered
for the Americans. Sgt Bentley managed
to be presented with a ‘Certificate of
Achievement' by the Americans. We
are still not sure what he achieved!
In early June we spent five days at
Sennelager conducting a Skill at Arms
Camp. This gave us the chance to
complete all the APWTs. We also ran a
Rifle Meeting for the Regiment. LCpl
Yorke and Tpr Darmola won the LMG
Cup in great style. The rest of June and
July were devoted to gunnery training
and gunnery camp. Sgt Hutt joined the
Squadron as 3 Tp Sergeant and the Sqn
Gunnery SNCO. The Squadron
achieved a good result thanks to every-
one’s hard work. i and 2 Tps
managed to destroy totally three model
aeroplanes during the air defence
practice. All the sabre troops produced
good battle runs. GW Tp managed
reasonable results. proving that they
could make their equipment work
sometimes. The Regimental live firing
exercise produced some spectacular
shoots from the Squadron. The reward
at the end of Gunnery Camp was three
weeks block leave.
After leave Exercise Lionheart was
upon us. Lt Bruseth handed over 1 Tp
to Lt Duda of the royal Australian
Armoured Corps who was with us on
Exercise Long Look. He quickly settled
in and soon the “popping of tubes"
could be detected in lTp. The exercise
had some amusing and memorable

moments for the Squadron. 2 Tp
achieved fame by capturing the entire
plans for the exercise much to the
dismay of the Bundeswehr. 3 Tp take
the prize for audacity in treading in the
footsteps of those who had already
been captured. However. they are con-
gratulated on excellent results in the
early stages, even if they didn‘t
see much action after their capture.
The exercise provided the first outing
for Support Tp under Col. Jones'
direction. They were reinforced by
reservists and found squeezing five
into a loaded Spartan interesting!
The event that most will remember
was the Squadron’s deep penetration
raid. Whether it was the voice of SSgt
Anderson from the top of the hill trying
to get to the bottom or, Captain Lewis'
