THE 9TH/ IZTH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAl WOs’ and Sgts’ Mess lt hardly seems a year since the last notes were written; much has happened in our first year in Wolfenbuttel, so it is difficult to decide what to mention, and how best to describe it. First we must publicly apologize to W02 Mick Todd, who. even though he is 6,000 miles away has been heard to complain, that he did not have his customary paragraph in last year's Journal, Don't worry Mick, we haven‘t forgotten you and we all look forward [0 yOUT return. Soon after the Americans and French had left following Spring Probex, the Mess started preparations for Mons Moy, as usual it was a very busy period, Owing to lack of space it was decided to hold the Mess Ball in the Gymnasium (As 12L had done in the late fifties) W025 Stu‘ Kirkbride and John Sewell, with their Committee put in a deal of hard work to produce one of the biggest and best Balls held for many years; which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. After Mons May the Mess put on several informal functions, One of particular note was a Chinese night. The Master Chef is something of an expert on Oriental food and he laid on a first class meal, while a high class cabaret provided the entertainment. However, the professional entertainers were soon upstaged by our very own double act. W02 Colin Mason quickly quickly spotting that BSM Brian Grundy had taken to wearing George Boots with civvies, as well as blues; spent a good half hour making certain everyone else knew. The Flanagan and Allen duo proceeded with Brian desperately trying to hide his wallet (obviously fat with the profits from his framing business) from the cabaret. During early July. RAF Laarbruch kindly extended an open invitation to members of the Mess (and the Officers' Mess) to visit the RAF Station. We 64 \\‘(HtR\‘\1t \\'|ch|tu.ttl \lkllx tltc \luth\ t'um’tctl In 2| l llcttnck took them up on their offer and were flown to Laarbruch by Chinook. The Commanding Officer, spotting what he thought to be a pile of tags, no doubt the softest seat in the helicopter, promptly sat down and fell asleep on it. The rag turned out to be the RSM’s suit. The owner was not impressed (unlike the suit!) Sgt Paul Jephcott kindly showed everyone what he had for breakfast by depositing mast of ll over the passengers. Strangely the RAF CVR(T) Squadron allowed Brian Grundy to command a Scorpion, something no one in the Regiment would dream of doing. He is now inr sisting on Commander's pay. [Or would be happy to accept 10%]. Need less to say. Danny Freeman declined to attend 7 not being a favourite of the RAF, Because of the Regiment‘s location, tthe nearest major unit being 50kms away) the Mess is unable to take part in outside sporting activities. However, we did have a very successful S-a-side season in the German Indoor League. and came overall runners up. All credit ro the team for their enthusiasm and effort. «\llllvlsts Ut litml» “(71K Lutrdrtcrantl Scucll |
