T/m on Supreme W/th S/r Hugh Foot on the Po/o F/e/d, Ep/skom Cyprus
the 27th Lancers were disbanded and absorbed into their parent
Regiment, the 12th Lancers, and Tim became a Regular Officer
in the 12th Lancers. He served with the Regiment in Austria
and Palestine, and then when the Regiment returned to England
he was appointed Adjutant to his old Commanding Officer in
the 27th, Andrew Horsburgh Porter, now commanding the 12th.
Tim went to Malaya in 1951 as Second in Command of a
squadron, but in 1952 he volunteered for service in Korea. For
his services on the staff of an Infantry Brigade he was awarded a
Mention in Dispatches. After a tour at the Staff College he saw
service on the Staff in Cyprus.
In 1956 Tim married Margaret Hasell at St Andrew’s Church,
Dacre, near Margaret’s old home at Dalemain.
From 1958 to 1960 Tim was a Squadron Leader and Second-in-
Command of the Regiment in Germany, Cyprus and England.
After the amalgamation of the 9th and the 12th Lancers he saw
service in the Regiment as Second-in-Command in Aden. Later
in 1964 he was Commander ofthe Kuwait Liaison for two years.
From 1966 to his retirement in 1978 he held various staff
appointments in England and Scotland having been promoted
Lieutenant Colonel.
Throughout his military career Tim was devoted to horse
sports; he rode in point-to-points, and played polo, but above
all he loved hunting. At Barnard Castle (1948-1951) he hunt-
ed with the Zetland on his good horse Badsworth. When sta-
tioned at Tidworth, he and Margaret hunted with the
Beaufort, and after settling at Dacre in Cumbria he hunted
with the Dumfriesshire.

Tim and Margaret always took a great interest in the countries
in which they served. I can recall many memorable trips round
the castles and monasteries of Cyprus with them when the 12th
Lancers were stationed there.
Tim farmed at Dacre after he retired but he found time to
involve himself in many causes, one being the Pony Club where
he represented Area 19 for over 25 years. His special interest
was the Horse Trials Committee of the Pony Club Council of
which he was a member for 20 years. In 1979 he was made a life
member of the British Horse Society and in 1990 he was award-
ed the Society’s Order of Merit. He was also President of the
Cumbria branch of the Royal British Legion and played a full
part in the life of Dacre parish.
Tim hunted with the Dumfriesshire Hounds for more than
twenty seasons. It was while out with them that he suffered the
stroke which was to be the cause of his death. Tim and Margaret
were much loved in the Regiment and, at his funeral at Dacre,
old Regimental friends acted as his pall bearers and Mr
Raymond Chandler 7 Tim’s old servant 7 carried his medals at
the service.
Tim was a good friend and a man of great faith and principle.
His family, Margaret, Diana and Celia will greatly miss him, and
to them we send all our sympathy.
