REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9th/12th ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S) 75 A Subaltern’s View of the Guidon Parade With the weeks ofpreparation required for such a parade one knew it was going to be a splen- did affair. The weather was on our side, a glorious cloud free sky with the midday sun beaming down onto all the Lancers. With the Regiment formed up, awaiting the arrival of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the distant hum ofa helicopter’s rotors could be heard. The waiting would soon be over and the long hours of practic- ing drill and polishing Sam Brownes would come to its conclusion. The enormous privilege of parading in front of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother is always rewarding. The presentation of a new Guidon is always an important event. National television news teams were there to film the occasion because our Colonel A Trooper’s View of the Guidon Parade y personal thoughts on the Guidon Parade were that it was an outstanding day that went very well. The hours and time that everybody put in made for an extremely memorable day. As it was my first Guidon Parade 1 was very proud to be a part ofit as members of my family and friends, who had travelled from Peterborough, were there This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the presentation of the new Guidon by The Queen Mother to the Regiment. Tpr Nash, A Sqn in Chief was doing this in her centennial year. After the Queen Mother’s blessing the new Guidon was paraded in front ofthe Regiment. The old one would be sent to Derby to remain on display as another important part of Regimental history. The Regimental Photograph was taken and then we moved to the Officers’ Mess for tea with The Queen Mother. With a comfortable congregation of local officials and dignitaries we enjoyed the company of The Queen Mother in a more relaxed environment. Having indulged ourselves there was an opportunity to talk with The Queen Mother as she departed the Mess. The remainder of the Regiment had lined the route to her helicopter where we wished our Colonel -in-Chief farewell.
