Polo
Capt EB on Dream #7 Harm/ex
his year has seen somewhat of a revival of polo within the
Regt, the Brigade and Germany as a whole. Hohne
Garrison Polo Club has been formed and is based at the stables
behind the Officers Mess. Cpl Debell is still the Stables NCO
with Tpr Whitford ably helping. A considerable amount of
work has been carried out on the infra structure of the stables
and paddocks, with Cpl D and Tpr Whitford using their initia-
tive to ‘find’ the resources to enable this.
This year’s season was off to a slightly late start due to everyone
being away in Iraq. However a very successful beginner’s polo
course was organised by Lt Clitheroe 2 days after our return.
Giles Omerod flew out from Tidworth Polo Club and taught
many people from the Bde as well as local Germans who were
keen to improve. The course was very enjoyable and concluded
with a small Tournament and party at the end of the week.
ZLt Richmond has taken over as Stables Officer from Capt E-B
and has already embarked on the creation ofa Polo arena in the
paddock neXt the stables. This will enable teaching, schooling
and basic skills to be carried out without damaging the pitch.
The pitch has been in excellent condition throughout the year
not withstanding the attack of the moles. Capt E B is still in the
lead on number of mole kills, with Cpl D and Tpr Whitford
playing catch up.
Chukkas were played every Wednesday in Hohne and at the
weekends in Soltau and Fallingbostel. ZLt Richmond having
learnt at Sandhurst and played in India managed to borrow
ponies during the summer and is hoping to buy his own for 05.
Capt E- B played for a number of German teams in Hamburg,
Kiel and Hanover early on in the summer and his progress was
slightly slowed towards the end due to Ponies off the Road

The club had its first proper tournament in September with
many Army and German civilian teams competing. After a lot
of fun The Red Rats team consisting ofBrigadier Bradshaw, Maj
Humphries (Highlanders), Capt E-B and Lance Bombadier
Cuthbert (3 RHA) triumphed over The Pol Roget team and the
20 Armd Bde team. The Black Rats team were beaten on points
and a proper match against them will be scheduled for 05.
Special thanks must go to Annie Hairsign who organised the
whole tournament, as well as playing for the Red Rats and to
Midas Telecommunications for sponsoring it.
We are now looking forward to the 05 season and fitting in as
much polo as possible before we deploy to Iraq.
