Year 2004
Transcription 26 REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE 9TH/12TH ROYAL LANCERS (PRINCE OF WALES’S)
to lead the TP through Annual Firing, not actually hitting any-
thing himself except the ground with his missiles! Having only
recently returned from GW Instructors cse L/Cpl “Gollum”
Plunkett proved that he was so good he landed a missile on the
front decks ofa striker in front of the whole sqn!! Tpr “bomber”
Harris on the other hand was awarded the coveted Top Thumb
trophy for his Jedi-like ability, use the force bomber!!!
The troop has had its fare share of new arrivals with S/Sgt
Emery, Sgt Pumford and Cpl’s Cassidy and Brassington gaining
extra Loa in the form of Babies. It must be something in the
water!! And finally the troop would like to take this opportuni-
ty to bid a fond farewell to SSgt Emery who has been posted on
promotion back to the mother ship (the gunnery school) and to
Capt Carpenter who hasn’t actually got a new job to go to yet but
where ever it will be good luck!!!
SHQ Troop
The Tp returned exhausted but intact from Iraq after a long and
successful six months in and around the Maysan Province. A
well deserved month of POTL in May followed with everyone
knowing they had to recharge their batteries before launching
straight into Ex SWABIAN LANCE 04 in June. After POTL,
prior to the start of the exercise, saw the departure of Capt
Searby off to ..... I could tell you but then I would have to kill
you ....... leaving Capt Milne Home in the driving seat from May.
The Tp, some what down on numbers for the exercise with the
absence of Cpl ‘OI’ Johnson and several others but 0C was well
manned by Sgt ‘I can still carry on’ Styles and LCpl ‘Deadeye’
Doherty leaving Capt MH, LCpl Lewis, Tpr Galsworthy and
whoever else was passing at the time in 0B. Nevertheless the
Yet another photo oppomm/ty,
exercise was a huge success for SHQ
who were noted as having extremely ‘
good comms despite these them i ,
being used to tell the odd white lie!
During the exercise the Sqn had day
ofR and R staying in a local German ‘
camp. This gave the chance for the
troop to relax and look around the
local town. LCpl Sadler took full .f
advantage and was last seen disap- I
pearing off for a personal guided
tour by a local.
Before disappearing off to do the
unmentionable thing, Capt
Searby organised an excellent 2
weeks Tp Adv Trg in the Harz
Mountains. In October the Tp deployed down to Torfhaus
Lodge near Bad Harzburg with bicycles and thermals for some
character building walking and riding. Sadly however Capt
Searby’s vision of ‘characterbuilding’ did not always match that
of the group. After an 80km bicycle ride Tpr Galsworthy, LCpl
Bissett and Cpl Brown, amongst many others, decided to dis-
agree with Capt Searby on the technical definition of a ‘fun
ride’. In the end after walking over 150km and cycling the same
over the 2 weeks the Tp went to the local saunas and ice rink to
relax. This did not go entirely to plan either with the locals not
fully seeing the point behind British Bulldogs and rugby tack-
ling on ice skates.

Under the SHQ tenure the C Sqn bar was commanded by Sgt
Styles and run (behind the bar) by several others from the Tp.
However special mention must go to Tpr Galsworthy whose
efforts in and out of working hours made all the difference. He
was a huge asset to the Sqn and sacrificed many nights propping
up the bar to work behind it instead, not to mention his influ-
ence and achievements in the building of the new bar.
SHQ were never far from the sports action either. Cpl Brown
won several medals with the Judo Team, SSM Welborn organ-
ised and played Regimental volleyball, Sgt Styles came second
in the Army Regimental Indoor Rowing competition and Tpr
Arbon gaining a place on the Regimental Football team to men-
tion just a few!
This year we have also had to say goodbye to several people. Sgt
Styles has moved down the corridor to the Tp Ldrs office and
Sp Tp while Tpr Galsworthy and Tpr Rhodes have returned to
civilian life. We wish them all the best in their new posts. With
departures come arrivals, namely Sgt Jones back from ERE,
LCpl Marven from A Sqn, LCpl Champkins, Tps Butler and
Bacon both from within C Sqn.
