LanL I’h is now about clghl months
old. Infancy produced few, il ant'. real diliicttl-
ties and the two halves of the amalgamation
have welded together into eight compact troops
to such an extent that no one really bothers [rt
remember who Came from which Regiment. In
tome Ways it was unfortunate that out hm
eight months consisted of the individual
training season, as undoubtedly the easiest way
to get cohesion is to live together in the field,
However, we at: ]uSl about [U start tntup
training and we hope to leave the barracks
often and for long periods.
We are very lucky to have S.S.M. Nicolle
whose genial bark and great experience has
heen invaluable‘ with him and with S. Q. M. S
Draper, who had been 5. S. M. in the 12th and
gt Adams who had been S. Q..M S we were
loaded with brass from the beginning.
Arrival at Lisanclly Camp was a shock as
the harrack huts really were appalling. A
great erlttrt has been made to make these
relics of the wartime American occupation
into habitable rooms and [l’IL‘ result of the
inter tmnp competition was 3 C105: thing

dignitaries imni tht- Secretary Of State down-
wards are brought to see it.
The winter, apart from o rind of three
weeks leave. was devoted to indi dual training
and a. a result of these seemingly interminable
courses we have succeeded in producing forty-
five 13.1.. [WelllyAuVO 8.11,. and twenty-rltrec

hundred and one. We also managed to fit in

stories of smuggling, which seems to be the
favourite pastime of the Border people.
'l’ogetlter with the rest of the Regim nt we
too smeared burnt cork on our faces and
crouched in ambush positions all night await-
ing the I.R.A.. who perversely failed to
appear. S Dcakin, however. arrested two
unfortunate innocents (In their way home from
a party and held thetn all night at the point of
his sub-machine gun. Apparently they were
not in the least put out.
1 Troup under Mr. Stephenson did a dcmon-
stration for the W.R.A.C. (T.A.) in London~
dcrry. No one quite knows what was demon—
~H’8ICCL but it was apparently successful and
no complaint has yet reached us! We also
distinguished ourselves by knocking down the
Ducal gates at Baronscourt in the darkness.
