\ Squash Squash is very much alive and on the up and up. It is now one of the most l played sports at all standards within the Regimentt Both courts have been ‘1 in constant use and many families have been playing. A Regimental competition was run during the summer months thanks to some hard work by Mr Gordon Harrison the Nut“: manager. After some hard fought early rounds the final was contested by Capt Simpson and Capt Sailing 1986 was a patticularly successful year for the regimental sailing team. Both events open to us, the l Armd Div and the RAC Regattas were entered but with a marked difference in results After much deliberation the team was selected from an overwhelming number of volunteers. and the following were chosen to represent the Regiment in the l Armd Div Regatta at Kiel in June: Lt John Tyszkiewicz, 2Lt Jamie Pedrick. Cpl Curlie Cherry. and Tpr Derek Sloan. Followers of the team will realise. of course. that none of the above is a qualified skipper, despite being ex- perienced sailors. The lack ofa skipper was caused by Maj. James Short being removed at the last moment to supervise a “TEWT” in Hildesheimt Potential disaster was averted by some frantic signalling around BAOR by the sailing officer, This effort resulted in W02 Chris Hyrons. 21 Engr. Regt, volunteering to skipper the boat. (His own crew had been sent on exercise at the last minute.) The crew performed disappointingly in the first days' racing. coming in in last place aboard their Conlessa 32. Possibly thanks to an excellent crew tie-brief in Sonderborg Marina that night. we did significantly better the next day. finishing in third place. Sgt Sexton proved too strong for LCpl Bennett in the plate final beating him 3—1. The Ladies had a good competition with Mrs Joyce Chapman running out a deserved winner over Mrs Marlene Conroy. The inter Squadron Squash Com- petition was mn on a league basis with HQ Squadron proving too strong for the other Squadrons. They won the league fairly easily with B Squadron the runners up. The Regiment looks forward to play- ing in a custom built coun in Wimbish and to establishing contact with lecal sides which should improve our overall standardt Finally, our thanks go to the LAD element. especially Capt Alastair Duncan. for the enthusiasm shown and the help given to the sport. Hopefully. they will maintain the same rapport with the QDG. Tpr Sloan working up a thirst in Sondeborg harbour. Denmark Morale rose with every race as the crew steadily improved as a team. and. by day five of the regatta, the regiment were neck and neck with 85 Engr. Regt. when tieing for first place. The final race started disastrously for the regiment in almost totally becalmed conditions; when the team crossed the start line a fraction before the gun. and it took a good forty five minutes to turn the boat around so we could legally restart the race when the wind finally arrived. further disaster struck as the spinnaker halyard came loose and shot to the top of the mast. As we were about to retire from the race. watching the rest of the flotilla disappear over the horizon. a young sapper. introduced only as “Ginge” who had accompanied W02 Hyrons. volunteered to shin up the mast to retrieve the halyard, Somehow he managed this. even in the force four wind that was now blowing. With the spinnaker flying once again, the team pulled out all the |
