In the meantime One Troop were dispatched to Berlin, and managed to establish a reputation for themselves. Both Lt Zeidler and Sgt Rowland managed to break their left ankles whilst leaping into the Harvel from a pier at a beach party. Time spent in recce is seldom wasted! Before the Autumn exercise the Squadron organised the annual Anglo- German Shooting Match. Sixteen teams participated, from both the Regiment and the local German Police. Many ales and Bratwurst were consumed by the teams and despite attempts to lose. the Squadon team narrowly beat the Salzgitter Kriminalpolitzei. THE 9TH2’12TH ROYAL LANCERS REGIMENTAL JOURNAL Ex ETERNAL TRIANGLE In October the Squadron participated as enemy on Exercise Eternal Triangle under command of 7 Armoured Brigade. As it was our last FTX in Germany there was considerable enthusiasm especially as other Squadrons played as Blue Forces. For most of the exercise the Squadron spent its time behind enemy lines. Support Troop and Two TrOOp taught the Gunners to clear villages before setting up M107 Batteries, much to the amazement of a Gunner Brigadier. Elements of GW Troop spent most of their time ‘missing in action’ (lost), and the failure of Sgt Reid‘s radios meant peace and quiet on the air while he was broken down. Even SHQ managed to get in on the act remaining hidden in a village surrounded by a Dutch Leopard Battalion and an Infantry Battalion. During the same incident the GOC lst Armoured Division landed in a helicopter. to be surrounded by SSM Hayter and a team from SHQ. The General failed to realise the gravity of the situation but his pilot did. Caution as OppCIsed to valour was exercised. To end what was agreed by many as the best FTX the Squaron has participated in, we Court Martialled and shot various members for cowardice, much to the amazement of the local Germans. l Troop Berlin again. Note the absence of Tp Ldr and Tp Sgt |
