Transcription After a few more local concerts
and Officers Mess Dinner nights. the
Band prepared to depart on Exercise
Maxi Mash. This was designed to test
a Band’s Medical role in time of war.
The Exercise took place in a little town
called Hameln. of Pied Piper fame.
The Field Hospital was set up in the
Gymnasium of Gordon Barracks, fully
equipped to deal with any kind of
injury On arrival the Band were
dispersed to different departments.
including Treatment. Theatre and
hospital wards. all of us gaining valuable
experience Almost immediately the
casualties started arriving by Ambulance
4 Tonners. Hospital buses and by
Helicopter. Over 1500 simulated injuries
were assessed. treated and eVaeuated
during the Exercise period. The Band
masters job in the Hospital was a
watchkeeper. By the end of the third
day his sense of humour was wearing
thin, after several members of the
Band had offered their time pieces.
After the Exercise it was straight
back to camp, and rear party duties.
The Regiment were in South Germany.
on their last week, we went out to join
them. The first job we got on arrival
was an Officers Mess dinner. held
under canvas in HQ Squadron lines.
The next morning we were up bright
and early to play for the Regimental
Sports Day
The following day was a Sunday. As
the Squadrons were spread around the
Countryside we were to play at five
church services: by the end of the
fourth we all knew the sermon by heart.
Back to Wolfenbtlttel and the Regi-
ment took part in Prohex once again.
The Band's part in the action was to
play for the drive past and give a
Concert with the French Fanfare Band.
It was now time for the annual round
of Schutzenfests, always a favourite.
although the distance we march seems
to get longer every year. Summer was
now upon us and work starting to pour
in, One of the first engagements was
for a Cocktail Party held in a Historical

Museum at Handover. We had to keep
moving SSgt McGauley around as
people were beginning to think he was
an exhibit.
